Not for nothing but there's been chatter of Cliff Floyd to the Tigers aout the Internet, perhaps inspired by speculation by a Detroit writer here.

Doesn't take long for this stuff to get out of control, so we may as well monitor it. The argument is Floyd might be expendable (highly debatable in and of itself), the Tigers need lefty swinger & Dombrowski has traded for him before.

Just for laughs, could the Tigers provide a match? Cameron Maybin, who I recall may have been one of the h.s. outfielders drafted in the same first round as Milledge, would be a generous haul. Kyle Sleeth is another former top pick just back from TJ surgery. I guess he's analgous to Humber.

Redundancy is a good thing to have. The Mets have redundancy in all parts of their game right now (even starting pitching, with Maine back and Pelfrey a few weeks closer than he was a few weeks ago). I'd be loathe to cancel out our redundancy in the outfield --- leaving us one injury (or Milledge getting lost) short of a real crisis, even after Nady comes back.

Floyd would have to be offered for a heckuva starter. I think well-enough-alone here.

Maybin is a 'Milledge-ish' HS OFer (uber-athletic toolsy dude) but was drafted just last June (2 years after Lastings) and is currently in low-A ball. Seeing as how we'd be in a 'going for it this year' kinda mode, even if we were of the mind to deal Cliffy I don't think you'd see such a now-for-later type deal.

Except that the Braves weren't a playoff bound team that year so they could afford a now-for-later deal.
Alexander pitched well for the contending Tiggers that year - as did Larry Anderson for Boston in the infamous Jeff Bagwell deal.

If Floyd's to be traded, it has to be for someone who will be more useful to the Mets than Floyd will be during the final few months of the season.

For example, if we suppose that Floyd's only going to be a reserve outfielder, getting a starting pitcher or a regular second-baseman would be an upgrade worth considering.

But trading him for someone who's not going to be on the postseason roster would be a mistake. It's one thing if you're 20 games out to make trades for the future, but you don't weaken your current roster as you're heading into the playoffs. Or into a pennant stretch drive.

Unless Monroe can't get healthy, I don't see any urgent need for Detroit to pick up Floyd. Yes their line-up is very righthanded, but who sits to make room for Floyd?

I could see a three-team deal, but otherwise the only major leaguer I could see the Tigers parting with is Todd Jones, who wouldn't help the Mets as a setup guy. It wouldn't make sense for the Mets to get prospects, unless somebody who has a major league player the Mets could use would want the Tigers' prospects.

I like keeping Cliffie, partly because I hate to trade anyone, partly because the outfield picture is stronger with him a part of it, even if Lastings starts for the rest of the season. But a trade that brought back a quality second baseman would be palatable.
