Being Darryl Strawberry

Now I have the sweetest swing in baseball.

What can you say about Darryl? He was The Man and at the same time the epitome of human frailty. There are a lot of should've beens but also a few remember whens when it comes to Darryl.

In 1988 I had season tix in the mezz on the 3rd base side.

Can't tell you how many times I'd watch the full unobstructed view of the flight of one Straw's awesome high arcing moonshots into and over the Mets bullpen.

There used to be a Pergament sign on top of the scoreboard. The first year it was there it said 'Hit This Sign And We'll Paint Your House' . Tongue-in-cheek of course because it was so high up - but if anyone this side of Dave Kingman could have hit it, it woulda been Straw.

Whenever he came to bat my friend and I would yell 'Darryl! Paint My House!!

I also remember that in spring of '83 there was a blurb in Sports Illustrated about him with a picture that called him 'The 'Back Ted Williams'.

I hated watching him leave as a free agent and at the time was screaming at anyone who would listen that the Mets should open the vault for him. As it turned out, they were wise not to listen to me.

I used to love Darryl & Doc equally but as the years have passed I truly dislike/disdain Doc while still having warm & fuzzies for Darryl. I guess its because I look at Doc has taken advantage of my fandom while Darryl kind of just faded away from me.
