My friend and I thought it was a lock that they would not get swept in that Philly series in '86 and we wanted to see them clinch. We drove down from Syracuse that morning to see the game.

As Yancy said - there were no real problem teams for the Mets that year but we sure as hell weren't too pleased with them on our long ride back to school that night.

The Mets had no thorns in 1986 until Mike Scott in October.

You may be remembering the three-game sweep at the Vet in September of 1986. The Mets went down there needing one win to clinch the NL East, and the Phillies and their fans were very proud that they were able to deny them a clincher on their artificial turf.

I was there, all 3 games.
Schmidt hit a homer off Gooden that seemed like it went on a straight line from his bat to the stands in center. No hang time.

One a those years the Phils beat the Mets more than any other team, or close to it.

On a side note to the KTE-

Tom Gordon as Phils closer, from what Ive seen of him, is no fluke.
He has had rediculously nasty stuff this year.
He has been flawless.

Yes the Phillies were the only team with a winning record against the Mets winning 10 of 18 games. I guessed that helped them nab 2nd place in the NL East.

thnx for the info W.P.

I thought so--cuz I went to alot a games that year in Philly and was pissed they lost so many times.
I had this streak going in the early to mid 80's where whenever I went to a Met game in Philly, the Mets won.

On a side note to metirish-Over here pissed means angry ;)
