I was talking to a co-worker, who is a Red Sox fan, about the differences between Met fans and Sox fans. My statement was that we are a much more optimistic group, mainly because all of the miracles and amazing games that we have witnessed as Mets fans. To show this point, I started listing off the top of my head all of the post-season games the Mets have won in extra innings. After verifying my list with UMDB, there were a few that I missed...

Here's a list:

10/16/69: Swoboda's catch, J.C Martin's bunt, Mets win 2-1 in 10
10/14/86: Darryl ends Ryan's no-hitter with dinger to tie the game, and Carter knocks in the winning run in the 12th
10/15/86: Game six against the Astros - 'nuff said.
10/25/86: Game six. 'nuff said.
10/9/99: Todd Pratt hits a game and series winning homer in the 10th
10/17/99: The Grand Slam Single game...
10/5/00: Franco K's Bonds in the 10th as Mets win 5-4
10/7/00: Benny's turn to hit a walk off homer in the 13th...


Heck, I'm not even including game 3 of the 86 playoffs when Dykstra hit his walkoff homer in the 9th...

The Mets have 37 post-season victories in their history, with 8 coming in extra innings. Does this seem to be a high percentage? It does seem that the Mets, throughout their history have never quite been normal....

I smell sarcasm.

There are teams that have been around way longer than the Mets who have not had the good fortune to have been involved in some of the most classic post season games ever played.

This is why Met fans feel that baseball is an amazin', amazin' ,amazin', amazin' game and we have no problem believing that miracles can happen.
In our short history we can testify that we have seen more than our share.

I can see both agruments here. In fact I've often wondered here on this forum about why, despite this being the "Ya Gotta Believe" franchise, the 69 and 73 out of nowhere franchise, the franchise with all those come from behind wins in the 1986 postseason, that Met fans in recent years have been more more sour, much more pessimistic than the what the perception (from what I see, here and read as I started my fandom in 1985) would lead one to believe through the first 25 years of the franchise's existence. And again granted I wasn't there, but what I can tell I'd bet 74-83 was probably ten times worse than the crap we've seen in the 1990's and 2000's

On the flip side, this franchise has the same amount of World Championships as the Florida Marlins, as well as the Cleveland Indians!

It took 17 years to go from championship #1 to championship #2. and its now 20 years since that last championship.

Its hard for a non fan to see any joy in that.

we've had some huge letdowns lately. game 1 of the 2000 WS was in our pockets, theres Kenny Rogers, theres Benitez's blown saves against the braves on back-to-back weekends in 2001 that effectively ended a crazy august-september run.
