The Big O Old-Timey Member Posted March 29, 2006 Posted March 29, 2006 9-DVD set. What caught my eye was "complete-game broadcasts". According to the first review, it's the WS + Game 6 in Houston. I think they may be getting my dollars very soon.http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CRR39W/102-4041198-7668114(Also available at mlb.com for the list price. My apologies if this has been posted before, but a search for DVD didn't show anything.)
Guest Bret Sabermetric Guests Posted March 29, 2006 Posted March 29, 2006 I've got the '86 WS and NLCS on videotape, haven't watched them in years. I think I should transfer them to DVD, like my thousands of other videos. Probably take some time, but save some space. (My apartment looks like a BLOCKBUSTER after a burglary.)
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted March 29, 2006 Posted March 29, 2006 $75 at Tower Records. Well worth it just for the bonus disc of interviews, celebration footage, big NLCS moments and the ring and flag ceremony from 1987 (in which there's in-commercial chatter between Bill Webb and Tim McCarver and you don't even need MLB TV). Game action remastered and looks amazin'.Go for it.
Methead Old-Timey Member Posted March 29, 2006 Posted March 29, 2006 I'm hyperventilating over here. Holy crap!
Guest KC Guests Posted March 29, 2006 Posted March 29, 2006 Someone should leave a review like this:Found out about this at cranepoolforum.net and immeadiately purchased. The thread over at cranepoolforum.net was right, this is must have for all Mets fans. I'm gonna go discuss this disc by disc over at cranepoolforum.net.
Methead Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2006 Posted March 30, 2006 They wanted 90 bucks for it at Borders.
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2006 Posted March 30, 2006 Never, ever, ever, ever, ever by a DVD at a bookstore. Also, never by ANYTHING at Tower Records.
Methead Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2006 Posted March 30, 2006 Yeah, I figured it was gonna be more expensive there... just not THAT much more. I'll generally spend a little extra if I can avoid paying for shipping. I'm hoping the Virgin Megastore price is the same as the Amazon price.
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2006 Posted March 30, 2006 Free shipping at Amazon for orders over $25.
Methead Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2006 Posted March 30, 2006 I'll also pay extra if I can have it today, as opposed to next week.
Methead Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 I broke down and paid full retail for this set last night, and I couldn't be happier. I watched a good portion of the NLCS Game 6 last night, and it was a lot better than the first time seeing it... on a 13" TV with the rabbit ears, in the dining room, while my mom taught piano lessons in the living room. It's also weird how little memories I have of the actual games... despite watching almost every minute back then. I coulda sworn Hatcher's game-tying homer was to right field... hopefully that doesn't mean that every other memory I have of my entire life is slightly wrong. The name Kevin Bass has always stuck with me for some reason... watching the game last night cemented it. He made two horrible throws to the plate allowing 2 Mets runs, as well as striking out to end the series. This morning on the train I watched the first 4 innings of WS Game 1. My plan is to plow all the way through the whole series from start to finish... I can only hope I have the stamina for it, already knowing the outcome.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Forty nine clams plus shipping at e-bay.Still feel like a sucker.
Willets Point Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 I remember the game less than my own emotions - the tension of the game made my heart go pitter-patter and sucked the energy from my body. That's what I felt at the end of NLCS games 6: tired. And I just watched the game. I don't think watching it on DVD would replicate the same emotions, although on the other hand it would give a chance to actually appreciate the baseball aspects.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 By the way, Paul Lo Duca has, in interviews, described his emotional memories of the game in much the same way as Willets. I think he's a similar age. Wearing 16 in tribute to Mazzilli --- considering he wasn't quite ten when Mazzilli was traded --- suggests he's pretty hard core. I think he'd be as good a target as any to solicit for our first visit from an active Met.
Guest Bret Sabermetric Guests Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 It's pretty amazing stuff. I re-watch the 1986 NLCS and Series maybe once a year, and it really keeps your interest, pausing it to review the strategy, the players' choices, etc..
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 I'm always afraid that if I watch that stuff too often Buckner's eventually gonna come up with that grounder.
Methead Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 I hope he does, so I can see Mookie beat him to the bag anyway.
Elster88 Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Knight doesn't score in such a scenario, no?
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 No. HoJo strikes out, game goes into the 11th with Sisk on the mound.

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 And, assuming HoJo goes down with a runner on third, who does Boston go with? I guess they stick with Stanley for an inning. After that, Steve Crawford? Joe Sambito? What with Mookie's wheels, the huge momentum shift, and the deeper pen, I think an objective bet has to go with the Mets (yea, even Sisk), even if Buckner picks that grounder clean.
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 I also think the Mets would have eventually won that game. But from the Upper Deck that night, looking down at HoJo on deck and Sisk in the pen, I wasn't feeling that confident.
Methead Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Hell, tie game with 2 outs and Knight running on contact, he might have kept on barreling toward home even if Buckner had come up with the ball. Buckner would have had to decide whether to beat the speedy runner to first, or gather himself for an accurate toss home. Lots of pressure there.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Nah, Knight was slowing up towards 3rd (one camera angle captures it) and had no shot at even pretending to score. Until Harrelson waves him on it looks like the thought that the inning might NOT over had never occured to him.

(Say it with me: "Media mail.") Ugh. I'd rather pay the extra $3 for Amazon's big plastic pouches of air and ensure the shipping isn't shoddy.
HahnSolo Old-Timey Member Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 Are these games with the original television announcers? because I have to say, Bob Murphy was never better than in the late stages of that NLCS Game Six. I'd love to hear Murph's call again.
Methead Old-Timey Member Posted April 6, 2006 Posted April 6, 2006 They're the original TV guys. Vin Scully is awesome.Just an aside... I discovered a great coincidence the other day. When I got married a few years ago, the wedding fell on the same day, October 18, as World Series Game 1. However, I've come to realize that the '86 Series started on that very same date.
