The meaning of "VALUE" in MVP

Heard an interesting argument last month amidst the whole Arod/Ortiz issue:

If you'd rather (and who wouldn't?) have Ortiz and 15 Mil (that you can spend on some other very good player) than A-Rod, doesn't that argue Ortiz's value?

In other words, MVP discussions should include actual financial value as well, since a far cheaper player literally means you have cash to spend elsewhere.

This argument wouldn't apply to significantly worse players (I don't want to hear the argument that Super Joe was the AL MVP last year), but if all else is equal, or nearly so, shouldn't the amount of $$$ a player earns become a part of the discussion?

Discuss.

i'd say no...if only because pre-free agency players will have absurdly low contracts in comparison.
i think "most valuable player" means the player who gave the most pure statistical value to his team, we should give GMs an award for having the guy with the best stats/cost ratio, not the players.

Now, if everyone would just line up behind Zvon with your apologies, regrets, and retractions, this will go a lot faster...

Zvon, this part of New Jersey you come from, is it anywhere near Montclair? And are you a former Met catcher and manager in your eighties? Are you short and homely and Italian?

maybe players should give back all their salary if the mvp race is tight, that way they would really increase their contribution to the team. better yet, maybe players could raise money themselves to sign other players to improve the team.
