I don't know what age I'm of, but Jean Shepherd is wonderful. People praise Christmas Story, and I recommend Shepherd's books, and they look at me like I have two heads.

I remember.
I was one of many of our generation who went to sleep with the transistor radio under our pillows listening to his radio show. I remember when he won the Playboy humor award one year.
Read the books, saw the movies, saw him at the nightclub in the Village, and even caught him when he came to speak at CCNY.

Yes I did, but have no real memories of his show. And my folks loved John Gambling. I liked the radio mysteries and "action" shows. Wasn't much into the "daytime dramas" like Stella Dallas and Grand Central Station. But for music, who could beat William B. Williams' "Make Believe Ballroom"? And for politics and other current stuff, Barry Farber.

I was a caller to early sportstalk - Art Rust Jr. and Bill Maser, of course.
They were still better than anyone doing that today. I liked the way they would let you talk to their guests.
The last (and maybe only) one who did that on WFAN was Ann Liguori.

Speaking of things we used to enjoy,
Remember on Thanksgiving Day when Million Dollar Movie (NY channel 9) used to telecast "King Kong" and "Mighty Joe Young" (the originals) back-to-back?

Well, this year, "King Kong" will be telecast Tuesday night (check your local listings).
But, never fear, football avoiders. "Miracle on 34th Street" will be telecast Thanksgiving Day.

I know I bring this up every Thanksgiving, but to me, the holiday and King Kong go hand in hand. I have a videotaped copy of the movie that I watch every Thanksgiving. I'm one person who's keeping this offbeat tradition alive, and I'm even passing it on to my children. (Whether it will stick with them into adulthood is another story. They may not watch King Kong every Thankgiving after I'm gone, but I'm sure they'll at least think of it when they think of me.)

btw, they remastered the old King Kong for the new DVD release, and Peter Jacksons crew from the new version recreated lost footage that was edited out of the theatrical release back in the 30's.
They also explain the stop motion animation process that was used documentary style.
