Edgy MD Site Manager Posted November 19, 2005 Posted November 19, 2005 I don't know what age I'm of, but Jean Shepherd is wonderful. People praise Christmas Story, and I recommend Shepherd's books, and they look at me like I have two heads.
Theoldmole Old-Timey Member Posted November 19, 2005 Posted November 19, 2005 I am of that age, and willcheck this out.
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted November 19, 2005 Posted November 19, 2005 I am definitely not of that age.

MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 Yes,I remember.I was one of many of our generation who went to sleep with the transistor radio under our pillows listening to his radio show. I remember when he won the Playboy humor award one year.Read the books, saw the movies, saw him at the nightclub in the Village, and even caught him when he came to speak at CCNY.Thanks,Later
Theoldmole Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 MFS -- ever listen to Long John Nebel, the godfather of all talk radio?
Guest ScarletKnight41 Guests Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 OMG - I remember him. My grandparents used to love listening to him!

And my folks loved John Gambling. I liked the radio mysteries and "action" shows. Wasn't much into the "daytime dramas" like Stella Dallas and Grand Central Station. But for music, who could beat William B. Williams' "Make Believe Ballroom"? And for politics and other current stuff, Barry Farber.I was a caller to early sportstalk - Art Rust Jr. and Bill Maser, of course. They were still better than anyone doing that today. I liked the way they would let you talk to their guests. The last (and maybe only) one who did that on WFAN was Ann Liguori. And who had FM?What about you?Later

MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 Speaking of things we used to enjoy,Remember on Thanksgiving Day when Million Dollar Movie (NY channel 9) used to telecast "King Kong" and "Mighty Joe Young" (the originals) back-to-back?Well, this year, "King Kong" will be telecast Tuesday night (check your local listings). But, never fear, football avoiders. "Miracle on 34th Street" will be telecast Thanksgiving Day.sighLater
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 This year, the newest remake of "King Kong" will be appearing in theaters.

I have a videotaped copy of the movie that I watch every Thanksgiving. I'm one person who's keeping this offbeat tradition alive, and I'm even passing it on to my children. (Whether it will stick with them into adulthood is another story. They may not watch King Kong every Thankgiving after I'm gone, but I'm sure they'll at least think of it when they think of me.)

Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 btw, they remastered the old King Kong for the new DVD release, and Peter Jacksons crew from the new version recreated lost footage that was edited out of the theatrical release back in the 30's.They also explain the stop motion animation process that was used documentary style.(I thought everyone watched March Of The Wooden Soldiers over Thanksgiving)
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 Zvon wrote:(I thought everyone watched March Of The Wooden Soldiers over Thanksgiving)Ick. It was always King Kong for me. No football. No parade. No Mighty Joe Young either. Just the big guy.(Note to MFS62: WOR actually showed a tripleheader on Thankgiving. In addition to the two movies you mentioned, they'd also show Son of Kong, a lame sequel that I only watched once.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 You can't just pretend Son of Kong didn't happen though.Peter Jackson seems to like the same books and movies I did as a kid. Well, you and a hundred million other peeps.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 Every so often, I try to go into my brain and try to erase unpleasant memories. That must be what happeend to my recollection of "Son of Kong".Yep, Yancy, I posted the programming alert just for you. I remembered last year's post about your love for the big fella'.Later
