Nomar for the outfield?? (NOT a rumour, just a thought)

I'd like to gauge people's thoughts on this. There is general speculation that this is where Garciaparra is going to end up (to the outfield from shortstop) in order to keep him healthy.

Who here would entertain the thought of singing Garciaparra to be the other corner outfielder along with Floyd?

Nomar would certainly fill the need of the big righthanded bat that, IMO, the Mets need to acquire this winter.

i dont really want to start bringing guys in to play them out of position.

LOL, she was one year behind me at NFHS!

Not just Met fans thinking this way as this very same topic has come up among Yankee fans as well.

Really? From where?
And why would the OF keep him healthier?

Not me

"Would certainly fill" assumes a return to '02/'03 numbers which is pretty big speculation at this point.
As a general rule I don't like switching guys position as they head for their mid-30s, and particularly don't advocate putting those types into spots which require more offense after their offense has started to head south.

I'm still confused as to why the Mets particularly need a righthanded bat.

silver, unless you count Mex, I don't know where Met fans are thinking this way.

The only place I'd play Nomar is second base, but that'd probably be a "plan G"

I just read Joel Sherman in Sunday's NYPost who says that little of the interest in Nomar is as a SS, but mostly at either 3B or LF ...
iow, not many believe he can play SS well enough anymore.

the mets need a BIG BAT, i see no reason why they need a righty though.
Beltran switch hits, Wright is a righty, Floyd is a lefty, and those are the 3 big guys in the lineup.
beyond that the SS is a switch hitter, the RF (whether Cameron or Diaz) is a righty and C, 2B, and 1B are all unsettled (though Castro and Jacobs are both righties and i'd bet good money that one of them is in the lineup next april 1st.)

whoops. i still don't see the need for a righty bat though, any bat will do.

I wouldn't be against a 1-year deal with a small guarantee and largish incentives, but only if we stay put on both 2B and 1B. IMO, he could be a 2B/1B--platoon with Jake at 1st and play 2B when Matsui's injured or sucky. If one of Matsui or Jake emerges as a quality regular, slot Nomar into the remaining position. If all three do well, trade either Nomar or Matsui.

Of course, he's never played either position so far as I can tell, but if you buy into the whole Jamesian defensive spectrum thing, he oughta be able to handle it.

If we acquire a top-tier 1B, however, I don't think there'd be room for Nomar unless we move Matsui.
