Maybe it's the manager

First they hired Bowa. Then brought back Mazzilli. Now Pena heads to the Bronx. If Joe really can't manage (see Mets, Braves, Cards), hire three former managers to cover his ass. Just catching a game in the dugout while your $200 million team takes the field isn't as easy as it once was.

Former Kansas City manager Tony Pena was hired by the New York Yankees on Thursday as their first base coach. Pena was hired as Royals manager in May 2002 and was voted AL Manager of the Year in 2003 after leading the team to an 83-79 record, its first winning season since 1994.

What it does is give you three very nice options for interim manager for when Torre is bounced mid-season after getting swept by the Mets.

Twice.

Are they going to have Tony Pena work with Robinson Cano on his plate discipline?

I remember when Ralph Kiner said "The hardest thing to do in baseball is walk Tony Pena".

If you can't throw cash at big name players, throw it at big name coaches.

I actually think both Bowa and Pena are good moves, though.

Torre's .529 winning percentage in Atlanta and .498 in St. Louis certainly don't work for me as evidence that he can't manage.

They look like good moves to me, remember last season there was talk of Bowa coming to the Mets as a bench coach, I like Bowa and I remember on Baseball Tonight he talked about how coaching 3rd base is one of the toughet jobs in baseball.

I think Guidry is a terrible choice fro pitching coach if they choose him, being around the game during Spring training does not make you a coach these days, I'm surprised they don't try for Dave Righetti .
