In the bottom of the eighth, Mike sent a half-inning of bouquets our way, how Sunday meant so much to him, how the fans kept him on his toes, how places like New York and Boston (and even Chicago, he added since he was there) are such great places to play. He didn't sound quite as resigned to leaving as he had before but he wasn't all "we're gonna get a deal done."

He seemed refreshed.

He wasn't bad.
I'm of the opinion that three men in the booth is rarely a good idea and it's particularly tough when one of them is Chris Berman who rarely stops talking long enough for anything else to happen.

Sandwiched between Berman & Sutcliffe it's probably been a while since Piazza felt like the shrimpy guy in the room.

He was pretty good.
Talking about the starter's wildness, he said something like "the catcher's setting up outside but the pitches are coming inside".
Sure enough, it happened on the next pitch.

I was amazed that he got time from the others to make his points. They worked pretty well as a team, nobody really stepped on each other's lines.

By comparison, I listened to today's Braves/ Astros game on radio.
John Franco was doing the color.
He basically sucked - he had to take his cues from the play-by-play guy about when to speak, and then showed a firm grasp of the obvious. And I'm sure his New York accent was grating to listeners in the hinterlands.

Um, MFS, Houston is the 4th largest city in the U.S. We're not "the hinterlands."

Don't color commentators, particluarly athletes brought in as ringers in the post-season take their cues from the play-by-play guy as a rule?

Yes, and that's what made Mike's performance so impressive. He seemed to fit right into the flow of conversation. He didn't seem to need a cue or lead-in. It was like he'd been doing it for years.

I remember thinking the same thing about Ed Lynch way back when. He was visiting Ralph, Tim, and Steve in the booth while he was on the DL, and he seemed very much at home there. I remember he was a GM for the Cubs for a while, but I don't recall if he ever did any professional broadcasting.

He's broadcast nationally, not just in Houston.
