Compensation Picks

I'd like to record sandwich picks gained and lost by the Mets when they have lost high-profile free ageints.

When the Mets lost Darryl Strawberry, they gained a sandwich pick that became Bobby Jones. That was probably a net gain. But they got another guy, I'm not sure who, but it looks like Al Shirley.

When the Mets lost Mike Hampton, they gained a sandwich pick that became David Wright. The jury is still working on that one, but it looks pretty rock solid for the Mets. I'm pretty sure the other guy they got (the Rockies first-round pick) was Heilman.

When the Mets signed Bobby Bonilla, the sandwich pick that the Pirates got, I think, was Jermaine Allensworth. (Of course, the sandwich pick isn't given up by the signing team.) I think the eventual number-two pick the Mets gave up was the hard-to-remember Kevin Pickford

It looks like the Astros sandwich pick for Beltran was baseball legacy Eli Iorg, and Michael Bowden was the sandwich pick for Pedro. The Sox took catcher Jon Egan in the Mets slot in round two. I don't know when the Astros get or got the pick the Mets owe them.

Edgy, You can try to figure it out from here:

Multiple picks in a round means an acquired (sandwich) pick and missing numbers means they lost a pick.

This also shows who they got with the acquired picks.

The only thing missing is the names of the players drafted by other teams to whom theylostthe picks.

If I remember right (and I might not) I think Sid Fernandez turned into Jay Payton.

Its my take that draft picks can't be "futires" like in basketball or football. They must be taken/ used in the next draft after the transaction .And, of course we all know, they can't be traded.

So, I guess that the Soxies and the Astros each got a sandwich (mmmm), but the Sox got the Mets' second-round pick, and the Astros got the Mets' third-rounder for Beltran --- which would seem somewhat unfair.

And on reflection, it looks like the 'Stros drafted ninth in the third round --- the Mets' position --- and took Tulane shortstop Tommy Manzella.
