Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2005 Posted July 23, 2005 Phil Nevin is gone to Baltimore for Sidney Ponson. Also reports that they've dealt for Joe Randa (professional hitter) - although not sure what the price was there.Either way it's not good news if your name is Sean Burroughs.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2005 Author Posted July 23, 2005 The Ponson/Nevin deal is apparently contingent of Nevin waiving his no-trade.The Randa deal is done and is for 2 minor leaguers.Sean Burroughs - one of the more higly touted prospects from a few years ago - sent down to the minors.Padres have now lost 5 straight on their east coast swing. They're only in 1st because they're the only West team still above .500 - although that's quickly slipping away.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2005 Posted July 23, 2005 Randa was had a two minor league pitchers, Nevin has yet to approve the trade to Baltimore, he has a no-trade clause.
Guest OlerudOwned Guests Posted July 23, 2005 Posted July 23, 2005 If Nevin doesnt accept the trade, doesn't that leave the Pads in a bit of a pickle?
patchyfogg Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2005 Posted July 23, 2005 If a guy negotiates a no-trade clause in good faith and the club agrees to it, no team should be allowed to even dream up a deal with that guy involved.
Guest ABG Guests Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 ]If a guy negotiates a no-trade clause in good faith and the club agrees to it, no team should be allowed to even dream up a deal with that guy involved.I don't agree with that. What I don't like about these things is the way the clubs manage to leak the trade and put extraordinary public pressure on the guy who negotiated a no-trade. Handle it quietly and respectfully.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 Exactly. If he vetoes the trade, no one should ever know anything about it.Of course, it is possible that in most situations it does happen this way...but it's still unfortunate when it doesn't.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 25, 2005 Author Posted July 25, 2005 Nevin invokes no-trade protection and so the deal for Ponson is off. That's at least the 2nd or 3rd one that Nevin has rejected - remember he was dealt for Griffey a year or two back but slam-dunked that one too.So he stays in Sandy Eggo, now he just needs to find some playing time. SD has said that Xavier Nady is going to be their full-time 1st baseman and they've traded for Joe Randa to man 3rd.
