Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 30 Posted May 30 Starting at the beginning is Bambino Mazzilli learning to be flycatcher from the best of them all. It's too bad Maz didn't pass on the basket catch to Mookie and Mookie to Dykstra and make it an organization signature into perMetutity. whippoorwill 1
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted May 31 Posted May 31 I dont know if they showed the ceremony on tv but Mazz was much warmer and grateful for the honor than i expected he would be, at one point he thanked the Cohens for bringing history back to the Mets, which certainly was a shot at the Wilpons. I was moved by his humanity, i really was. Bobby Vee you could tell had given versions of his speech at a lot of banquets but he too was warm, even tho he went on way too long. He had a nice thing to say about everyone up there, even Steve Phillips. It was good to see Torre there, Al Leiter, Mookie, McIlvaine, etc
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 31 Author Posted May 31 Mazzilli had been social media haranguing against the pope accepting the retirement of Cardinal Dolan, which makes me a bit suspicious that he is the sort of aging, once-famous guy with a blindspot in his guile, that #MAGA is adept at recruiting into the culture war. Maybe he just buddied up with Cardinal Dolan along the way, but praising Cohen as a minor swipe at the Wilpons tends to strike me as a suspiciously populist gesture, but it was probably just being gracious to the host. I'm mostly just glad that Mazzilli's career, which took a bad turn too early, gets it's day. whippoorwill Old-Timey Member Posted May 31 Posted May 31 Interesting that they HAD to mention Brooklyn born every time they mentioned Torre and Mazzilli
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 31 Author Posted May 31 Lots of sexy Mazzilli magic in this 1980 highlight reel, opening with the sexy jazzy vocal stylings of Ben Vereen.
whippoorwill Old-Timey Member Posted May 31 Posted May 31 Mind blown. In 1984 I could swear we took our almost one year old daughter to cooperstown , hubby was way past asleep, and I was kinda watching alone when Mazilli was the All Star Game hero. Completely the wrong year. What was I watching??
