One of the few bright spots to an otherwise dismal start to the New York Mets' season has been doused.

Left fielder-first baseman Jared Young was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a torn meniscus in his left knee. Outfielder MJ Melendez was called up from Triple-A Syracuse to take Young's place on the roster.

At 7-11 entering Wednesday's series finale vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers and an offense that has been scuffling, Young stood out in the early part of the season. After making the Opening Day roster, the 30-year-old switch-hitter had produced a .350/.391/.450 slash line with no homers and two RBIs while appearing in 11 games, mainly against left-handed pitching.

Young last appeared in Sunday's 1-0 loss to the A's, which is when he reported experiencing soreness in his left knee. He underwent imaging, which revealed the tear.

Melendez will be making his Mets debut after playing the last four years for the Kansas City Royals, then signing a split deal with New York in the offseason. At Syracuse, Melendez had a slash line of .216/.286/.431 with two homers and three RBIs in 14 games.

How in the world did that happen offstage?

If it's truly a torn meniscus, it's likely going to be a lot more than 10 days.  It's strange that it happened again after happening to the guy whose roster spot/role he got.

Was one of the most productive Mets early season.

Of our top 4 OPS leaders, Soto and Young are now on the IL.

Alvarez is the active leader (.943) followed by Luis Robert (.764)

Lindor is third (.604). Everyone else is below .600.

Is there a reason to place Young on the 10 day IL when most torn meniscus take 3-8 weeks to heal without surgery.  If he were to require surgery the recovery becomes 3-6 months.  At least the Mets didn't decide to play the day to day card on this one.

Why doesn't he take Polanco to the IL with him.  The man is unable to play defense as a result of his persistent Achilles tendon inflammation.  He can't run for the same reason and I am really questioning whether or not he can hit.  If he does get a hit, the Mets often have to pinch run for him.  Just put him on the 10 or 15 day IL and let him heal so he can have a chance of contributing.

Most folks don't go straight to the 60.  Even if their arm has been detached and sown back on, they usually start with a short-term IL assignment unless/until they need his spot.

It may seem overly cautious, but if one guy gets a premature assignment, and is ready before he has spent the minimum 60 days, that would be an own-goal, so they try to stick with the protocol of not assigning anybody to the 60 until necessary.
