MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted January 29 Posted January 29 In addition to formally announcing the signing of Craig Kimbrel, the Mets announced the signing of veteran catcher Austin Barnes. The Sporting News through Yahoo: Barnes is a 36-year old catcher who has played all of his MLB games with the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he won two World Series rings. He's always been regarded more as a defensive-minded catcher, and he's a career .223 hitter who batted .214 in just 42 at bats in 2025.Barnes is a depth signing, one would think, as the Mets seem set with Francisco Alvarez and Luis Torrens as the catchers on their MLB roster, but if Barnes impresses in the spring, he could push Torrens for that backup job. https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/mets-officially-announce-free-agent-195412186.htmlLater

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 30 Posted January 30 Mets Roster Central doesn't see him as sticking around long if he doesn't somehow make the squad.Ten seasons of big-league ball make it hard to go back to the sticks at 36. He's from Riverside, CA, and got to spend his entire big-league career with the home team. No knock on Syracuse, but I don't know if that is the hill he wants to die on.On the other hand, there's your sweet fold-out couch.
