George Altman, the oldest living Met and only living nonagenarian, has died. It was announced yesterday but I haven't seen any confirmation of the actual date of death.

The oldest living Met is now John DeMerit, 89 years and 323 days.

I named a disease after him. The symptoms were:

- a ballplayer who had found success in his (Bill James) 27-29 years.

- as soon as the Mets acquired him (a year later), his performance declined to just a fond memory.

I named it the George Altman Syndrome.

RIP, George.

I will never forget you.

Played in some pretty legendary minor league circuits — The Three-I League, The Western League, and The Panama Winter League. A connection to a lot of history — along with eight years and over 200 homers in Japan. His Mets tenure was marred by a debilitating shoulder injury.
