On this day in 2011, after midnight in a game that started the night before, Jerry Meals made a bad call. It wasn't the worst call ever (probably wasn't), but it was really bad, and the replay was so indicting and the national outcry was so resounding, it may be the call that sent us irreversibly on the path of toward replay review.

Interesting theory!


Two potential counterpoints: there was already (limited) replay review in place by this point, on potential home runs (fair/foul and homer/not).


The Armando Galarraga shoulda-been-a-perfect game had occurred the year earlier. And like this one was a potentially game-ending bad call. In fairness, it was not a game-deciding call as this one was.
