When you have two backup infielder guys, you tend to have one who is more likely to back up up the middle, offering defense first, and one who is more likely to back up on the corners, ideally being the better hitter of the two.

Hopefully, their skill sets overlap, and you can move them both around, but assuming they are unlikely to present as well-rounded enough to be starters, those are the profiles they gravitate towards.

Well, with the general proliferation of relief pitchers and the more specific apparent surfeit of outfielders the Mets are carrying this year, it is likely only one backup infielder comes north, and that is a shame if your name is Jared Young, because that second job would totally be yours.

Jared has played all over the field, but makes his living on the corners and swinging the stick, but hasn't yet established himself as a big-league hitter at 29 years and 244 days. But the native of Prince George, British Colombia, has been tagged for 1.7 fWAR in 2025. That is as much as David Peterson and 0.1 more than Sean Manaea! Ronny Mauricio, Luisangel Acuña, Tylor Megill, Tyrone Taylor, and Jesse Winker are looking up at his projection from even lower down, even as most of them are far more likely to go north on opening day!
