I got a http error 500 several times earlier...

Google AI sez:

[bLOCKQUOTE]An HTTP 500 error, or "Internal Server Error," indicates a problem on the web server's side that prevents it from fulfilling a request. It's a general error, meaning the specific cause isn't always clear, but it's not an issue with the user's computer, browser, or internet connection.

Here's a more detailed explanation:

What it means
: The server encountered an unexpected condition while processing a request.

Where it happens
: The problem is with the server itself, not the user's side.

Common causes
: This can include issues with the server's code, configuration, or database connections.

Not user-side
: It's not a problem with your browser, computer, or internet connection.

Troubleshooting
: Try refreshing the page, clearing your browser cache, or waiting for the website administrator to fix the issue.

For website administrators
: Review server logs, check code for errors, ensure correct file permissions and database connections, and investigate any potential issues with plugins or themes, according to one.com.[/bLOCKQUOTE]

Yeah, that too. I think eHost, JustHost, BlueHost and now

iHost are really all the same company but broken up for tax,

accounting or some regulatory reasons.

I visited QWK.net the other day and see they're still going strong.

Then I remembered their phpBB support was either not-so-great

and maybe even non-existent. I don't remember exactly.

They pretty much don't want to spend much time supporting a site that doesn't use WordPress. They tell me I have to "optimize" the site, but don't tell me where it's not optimum.

So here's what I did. (This is kind of like "inside baseball" isn't it?)

I looked at log files to see what pages were getting the most activity in the UMDB and I disabled two features that the bots were murdering.

There was a tab on the player page that looked at play-by-play data (the same data that is used to generate the scorecards) and allows a visitor to see how a player performed in different situations. Runners on first and third in the seventh inning against a left-handed pitcher, for example. The bots were rampaging through that page, "clicking" on all of the possibilities. So I got rid of that tab. It was probably used far more frequently by bots than by humans.

The other feature was on pages like these: Ultimate Mets Database - Willie Stargell and Ultimate Mets Database - Juan Marichal

In the section that shows how the player performed against different Mets pitchers or hitters, each of the columns were sortable. The bots were killing this page too, going through player after player, Mets players and opponents alike, sorting all of the columns.

The automated abuse of these two features put quite a load on the server, and overloaded the so-called "unlimited" bandwidth. This should make things better, but how much better remains to be seen. There may be more features that I'll have to cull, but for now this is it. We'll see what happens.

It's like some 50's Sci-Fi B-movie-thriller classic...

Attack Of The BOTS!

potg.ultimatemets.com doesn’t support a secure connection

Attackers can see and change information you send or receive from the site.

It's safest to visit this site later if you're using a public network. There is less risk from a trusted network, like your home or work Wi-Fi.

Getting this now when I go to vote in POTG

This is a bogus claim. I mean, nothing is 'secure.' But, for example,

the 's' after http on the link below means it's somewhat secure...

I added the asterisks to make the url readable...

I hope it doesn't mean that Russian hackers are trying to influence your Schaefer vote!

If Brett Baty suddenly has a surge in Schaefer points, we'll know that the election has been rigged.

I'm guessing a swarm of bot activity came through. We have a lot of pages on this forum, and if a bot decides to index each and every page, it will definitely but a strain on the database.

I'm starting to get 'Too Many People' messages on the site ... which would be one thing if it meant I was getting the Paul McCartney song but, alas, it's just a blank page.

Not because of this, but I'm going to start scaling back the features of the UMDB this offseason. There will be fewer clickable pages, and that should (I think) help matters. The bots run rampant through the site and that's most likely what's causing these overloads to occur.
