Very Metsy for Vientos to get hurt right before the trade deadline, by the way.

Vientos is a low BA & low OBP guy that strikes out far too much.  He doesn't run well and is a defensive liability wherever they try to play him, but he does have power.  Seriously, who would want to trade for Vientos for a stretch run?  If someone actually wanted him, I doubt the Mets could expect much for him.

That said, I hope he wasn't seriously hurt with that HBP on his wrist/hand.

I didn't think the Mets allowed such a thing.

Keeping his pitch count down certainly helps.  Currently, at 86 pitches through 6.6 innings.

The Nelson story is always welcome, but Joe Pigatano was not Casey's bullpen coach.

On the other hand, he was a 1962 Mets backup catcher, so he may well have been the guy to pick up the phone.

It was an interesting spot he was in, with the tying run up and the Royal bench filled with lefties.  He pulls Manaea for a righty and the Royals pinch-hit right away.

He might be criticized for not having A.J. Minter ready as an option at the moment, to stick with the lefty but get a fresher arm.  But maybe Manaea was the best matchup.

I tip my hat to Andy Green for the letting Manaea finish the 7th

Sure. But as much as we like to criticize the manager (or the pre-game plan) for pulling the pitchers, too often it's the pitchers causing themselves to be pulled. In Manaea's last four games prior to today he's been at:

95 pitches thru 5-1/3 -- 80 would be a decent number here, and the bullpen gave up 1 hit + 1 walk over 3-2/3

86 thru 3.0 !! -- 'nuff said

90 thru 5-2/3 -- A slightly high but reasonable number, then walked his last batter w/two outs and was pulled with two on in a two run game

and one hundred and freakin' eight thru 5 -- that's an OK total for SEVEN innings. Plus he left down 6-Zip.

You wanna stay in the game longer? Then pitch better AND more efficiently. Today Sean did both so Green's different decision was made more out of different circumstances than it was some kind of mindset re-set.

But pitch counts should inform these decisions, not dictate them.

The science that suggests that a pitcher loses x amount of effectiveness after y pitches, or y innings, or y times through the batting order is all over the place.

It's not the only factor (Manaea allowing 17 runs in 25 innings during that stretch played a big part as well) but it's certainly A factor. Like I said, pitch well and efficiently and you'll find yourself being asked to stick around longer in games longer. Manaea has mostly been neither.
