The Stockholm headquarters of the Crane Pool Forum announced today that 2025 will be the final year of Schaefer voting. A spokesperson indicated that the reasons include voter attrition, overall declining interest, and pressure from the Federal Communications Commission. The CPF Schaefer Player of the Game voting was inspired by similar voting performed by the WOR Mets broadcast team during the 1970s. Its current iteration has lasted for 21 years. The inaugural winner in 2005, David Wright, would amass six Schaefer titles. Pete Alonso is a four-time winner, and Jacob deGrom won the award three times. Other winners were Johan Santana, Jose Reyes, Daniel Murphy, Lucas Duda, Yoenis Cespedes, Michael Conforto, and Francisco Lindor.

Voting will continue for the remainder of the 2025 season, and the 2025 winner will be announced some time in October.

Any lapsed voters who wish to return to the fold for the final days of this long-standing tradition will be welcomed.

One last beer run. May it end in a champagne shower.

Hoisting a Schaefer -- more than one -- to Grimm, the keeper of Player of the Game flame. His efforts on behalf of this prize will always rate a 6.0.

Say it ain't so,[CROSSOUT] Joe[/CROSSOUT] Ben.

I was late to the contest. I just started voting regularly this year and it has been a newly discovered pleasure.

But if you are disbanding the place, please pass the receptionist my number.

She'll need a new home.

Sorry! I had gotten it to the point where it took very little effort, but so few people were interested anymore that it began to not even feel like it was worth that small effort.

I imagine the upkeep of all the spreadsheets and stuff took forever. I ran a few Hall of Fame projects on another site, but participation constantly dwindled to 7-8 votes at most. It took forever to maintain the spreadsheets and do updates for each election so I let the projects fade into the ether.

Well, there are no spreadsheets involved. There had been originally, until I created the online form that enforces the voting rules, saves the votes to a database and does the tallying. (Before that I had to prorate for people who awarded more than ten points, fix misspellings, and other headaches.) Maintaining Schaefer has been pretty easy, but with only six participants (in addition to myself) and little reaction to the posted results, the few minutes a day it required was taking up more headspace than I cared to give anymore.

I appreciate everyone who's been participating, but to everything a season and all that, and Schaefer's time has come to an end.

I have participated and enjoyed it. I've never understood why so many regular active posters didn't have an interest in it

Ben, thanks for all your efforts and a thanks to all who made this fun

I would encourage you to make it a umdb feature, and un-Crane Pool it.

The way to protect a system from Edgy-related failures is to make it less Edgy-reliant.

I tell my family this all the time. Dogs, too.

I considered that a few years ago, but at this point I don't think there are going to be any new UMDB features. In fact, I'm planning on starting to scale it down this offseason.
