Hale is a big palooka (6'4"/290 according to his collegiate profile) from down in Paducah. He's also the grandson of longtime MLB catcher and coach, and minor league manager, Phil Roof, who played long enough to start his career with the Milwaukee Braves and finish it with the expansion-year Toronto Blue Jays.



Phil is the older brother of Reagan-era MLB outfielder Gene Roof and cousin of Eddie Haas, who replaced Joe Torre as skipper of the Braves.



In all, Hale — late of the UNC-Charlotte bullpen (go, Forty-Niners!) will be the 16th member of the Roof/Haas/Sims family to play pro ball across several generations of Major League and Minor League diamonds. And my goodness, he looks like he will be the biggest.
