Mentioned in another thread, but deserves its own note, however bitterly — Domingo German pulled off the 24th perfect game in MLB history last night.

Frayed Knot asked if it should come with an asterisk, as it was against the 2023 A's, but he's joining something of a proud team tradition of the powering up on the hapless, as David Wells' perfect showing came against the 1998 Twins and David Cone's against the 1999 Expos. Neither team had a record as awful as the one this year's Athletics seem to be careening toward, but both were largely undistinguished squads. (No offense, Vladdy.)

And hey, Jim Bunning needed to call on the 1964 Mets to leave his mark on history.

I was, of course, kidding about the asterisk thing.

I think I first used that joke in 1981 when Len Barker threw a perfecto against the Blue Jays who were hitting about. 215 as a team at the time.

David Palmer DID get something of an asterisk when his perfect game went only five innings before the rain ended the game early.

MLB initially recognized the game as part of the official list of perfectos, but later reversed the decision, which must've stung a little bit, especially since (if I'm correctly recalling) he had originally made good (in a sense) by going out and throwing four perfect innings to begin his next start, against the Mets (again, if I'm recalling correctly).

Just checked and ... https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/MON/MON198404250.shtmlnot quite. Palmer did face the Mets in his next start after the mini-perfect game (el perfectito) and pitched seven shutout innings against Dwight Gooden, but his extended perfection only continued for 3 1/3 more innings before Ron Gardenhire brought the pain with a one-out single.

There were a whole bushel of asterisk'd no-hitters plus a couple perfects which is why MLB culled all which didn't meet certain criteria most notably that it has to be a full 9 innings and the pitcher needs to get the W (not all no-nos result in a win).
