Trying to remember marathon game where...

So I'm trying to remember a game at Shea - late 80's or early 90's - went super late. As I recall, some player didn't start - was out because of a family illness or wife gave birth or something - but as he was flying back home he saw the lights at the stadium, came to Shea, and got into the game. Am I totally making this up?

Welcome a-Bordick, moogoox.

I don't think you're wrong. I seem to remember the tale of the player seeing the lights on, though I'm not sure if he got in the game later.

Remember any other details?

Ron Gardenhire pops into my brain for some reason?

(but I'm more often wrong than right)

Mackey Sasser, returning from his father's funeral. I was at this game, was freezing (April night; shoulda brought gloves), left in the tenth, got home, it was still going and there was Mackey in civilian clothes wandering into the dugout. Suddenly he's pinch-hitting.

Made the last out.

Yes - that's absolutely it! Funny - I also left early, listened to the game on the way home, and caught the end on tv. I remember an announcer saying Sasser "arrived tomorrow for today's game."

Thanks!
