Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 21, 2022 Posted May 21, 2022 Updates soon in this space. Just thought you should know that attendees at this evening's game at Mirabito Stadium will have a chance to meet an MVP.https://img.mlbstatic.com/milb-images/image/private/t_16x9/t_w1024/milb/yfbi4skrrciaahamwxme.jpg>
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2022 Posted May 21, 2022 And, in case you're wondering what spiedies are (I had to look it up), they're apparently a Binghamton-specific type of sandwich:https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1017420-spiedieshttps://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1017420-spiediesMy daughter went to college there for four years and never mentioned them.Later
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2022 Posted May 21, 2022 We have them here in Syracuse all the time. I am making them tomorrow in fact (though I have to pan fry them as I have not yet gotten my new grill for the season).
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 21, 2022 Author Posted May 21, 2022 A Zach Ashford single provided the Ponies with an 11th-inning walkoff win this evening, before the gigantic presence of one Kevin Mitchell. It broke a five-game losing streak for Bingo, a team sorely in need of a turn of the corner, with their record rising to 13–25, as they try to dig their way out of sixth and last place in the Eastern Division of the Eastern League. It should really just be called the Meta-Eastern Division.Call it what you will, but they are 13 games out of first and four games out of fifth. That's a big hole. The vaunted three-prospect lineup of Francisco Alvarez/Brett Baty/Ronny Mauricio has been just OK so far, after Alvarez's torrid start, with the three cruising along with OPS's of .746, .780, and .761 respectively. The only one hitting of late has been dreamy centerfielder Jake Mangum, who has gone 8-for-21 with a couple of doubles and a pair of walks the last week, for a .381 average and a .934 OPS, raising his season numbers to .283 and .761. The rest of them have been making a lot of wind. The pitching side is getting harder to appreciate at the minor league level, because even the top starters are rarely allowed enough innings to qualify for a win, and even if they do, there's still plenty of game ahead for them. So while José Chacín is still looking for his first victory, his 18 innings over four starts have been worth noticing, as he has struck out 18, walked five, and put up a 3.00 ERA.The real show has come from relievers. Trey Cobb a 2017 draftee out of Oklahoma State, has had a spotty career, and absolutely got the stuffing beaten out of him last year with Syracuse. But a demotion has been a mitzvah for him, and he's been lights out, throwing to a 0.68 ERA in 13 1/3. The right-hander has struck out 19 and walked but two, and while he wasn't able to find that same je ne c'est quoi during a brief promotion back to Syracuse, the folks back in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma know he's got it in him.Tomorrow afternoon is both Family Funnday AND Senior Sunday, so all of you who headed up to the Triple Cities area to hang out with Kevin Mitchell are in for some more thrills no matter WHAT generational demographic you call home. Mitch Ragan put his 0-1/5.91 record ON THE LINE against the visiting Akron Rubber Ducks.I'm not sure what to make of it, and he's not shown in the table below, but roving hitting coach Hugh Quattlebaum has taken up a residency with the team in recent weeks.YOUR 2021 Binghamton Rumble Ponies[th]Position Edgy MD Site Manager Posted May 24, 2022 Author Posted May 24, 2022 Bingo beats Reading 4-3 after scoring a magic runner in the 10th.Top-flight relief of two scoreless innings each from Josh Hejka and Bryce Coppermountains, who took home the win after inducing a game-ending double-play with the tying run on third.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2022 Posted May 24, 2022 Attendance was over 7,700 for an 11 AM start. Was it a significant day in Redding history (a Patriots Day or marathon kinda thingie), or did they just want to give this a try?Later

vtmet7 Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2022 Posted May 24, 2022 (edited) And, in case you're wondering what spiedies are (I had to look it up), they're apparently a Binghamton-specific type of sandwich:https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1017420-spiedieshttps://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1017420-spiediesMy daughter went to college there for four years and never mentioned them.Laterspiedies are pretty good...kind of like a shish kabob turned into a sub sandwich...by the way, I also went to college at SUNY Binghamton, aka University Center at Binghamton, aka Binghamton University (and about 6 other names for it over the years)Each year, they have a Spiedie Fest and Balloon Rally at Otsiningo Park in Binghamton...it's pretty big for that part of NYShttps://www.spiediefest.com/https://www.spiediefest.com/https://www.bonappetit.com/story/spiedies-binghamton-new-york-sandwichhttps://www.bonappetit.com/story/spiedies-binghamton-new-york-sandwich Edited May 24, 2022 by Guest

MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2022 Posted June 30, 2022 From NBC Sports: Scherzer also had the opportunity to work with top Mets prospect Francisco Álvarez, a catcher out of Venezuela ranked seventh on MLB Pipeline's Top 100 rankings. Though the Mets have already invested a four-year, $40.6 million deal in veteran backstop James McCann, Álvarez is not far off from being MLB-ready and could join the team even as a DH down the stretch should he continue raking in the minors.“He's seen these hitters more than I have, so he had different thoughts on situations where he felt he was right,” Scherzer told reporters Wednesday. “Sometimes I felt like I was right. That's a process of throwing to a young kid for the first time. So he made some adjustments along the way, worked with me pretty well. So [i'm] excited to see what he can do.” Later
