roger_that Old-Timey Member Posted June 2, 2021 Posted June 2, 2021 How many other Mets can you think of whose name contains a phonetically spelled-out letter of the alphabet? In Endy's case, actually, TWO syllables (N.D., get it?) I'm a few Mets shy of a complete alphabet (and a few beers shy of a six-pack) but maybe you can think of some others. There's Floyd Youmans (U), Jay Bruce, Tom Seaver, of course. Any more come to mind?
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 2, 2021 Posted June 2, 2021 J. Bruce and McK. Christensen want equal time!RADK won a Cy Young Award, for God's sake!
roger_that Old-Timey Member Posted June 2, 2021 Author Posted June 2, 2021 Actually, you remind me that one of my favorite squads back in the day had a ton of players whose names ended in the syllable "Key" (Gilkey, Mlicki, etc.) which isn't a letter of the alphabet, but there must be some names that contain the syllable "Kay"I don't see how R. A. Dickey qualifies, except I guess because he went by his initials. J.C. Martin would qualify, too, by this standard but, like the baserunner who loses contact with the base, I consider that kinda cheating.
roger_that Old-Timey Member Posted June 2, 2021 Author Posted June 2, 2021 Billy Beane sort of makes the cut. Conforto (and a lot of others whose names end in "O") fershure. De Aza.I was thinking that "Beane" is the part that sort of qualifies, but I guess if you break his first name (and a zillion others' names) into "Bill E" than he qualifies as an "E" as well.
roger_that Old-Timey Member Posted June 2, 2021 Author Posted June 2, 2021 I realized that I got started on this because of the Villar = V. R. thread. So far, the alphabet looks likeA=B= BEaneC= SEAverD = DE AzaE= WillIE MaysF =G = Dillon GEEH =I =J = JAY BruceK = McKAY ChristensenL =M =N = ENdy ChavezO = ConfortOP = PIazzaQ =R = VillARS =T =U = Floyd YOUmansV =W =probably impossibleX =Y =Z =
roger_that Old-Timey Member Posted June 2, 2021 Author Posted June 2, 2021 Sorry, which syllables for the phonetic sound of letters are these? You're not suggesting that Maddox is pronounced Madd-EX, are you? I don't get Hefner either.I mean, it's sort of pronounced like Madd-EX, but the vowel sound is wrong. So is the last syllable in FelIX Millan's first name too. Slightly off. We never had a guy named Exley, have we?

Chad ochoseis Old-Timey Member Posted June 2, 2021 Posted June 2, 2021 Xavier Nady. IIRC, he pronounced it X-avier and not more like "Zavier".Also, EFFing David Peterson.

roger_that Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2021 Author Posted June 3, 2021 Was "EX-avier" a mispronunciation or how Nady actually pronounced his name? Usually, I think "Zavier" is how it's pronounced. It's sort of like counting "Texiera" as having an "EX" sound in it because some people mispronounced it "Tex-i-e-ra"
