Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2020 Posted December 23, 2020 The Mets have contacted LeMahieu's agent, according to Heyman. He's played 104 big-league games at third base. I wonder if they're thinking about playing him there?
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2020 Posted December 23, 2020 This honestly makes no sense. McNeil should play second. Davis should play third or be traded.I wonder if they're just upping the ante for the Yankees, who actually need him.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2020 Author Posted December 23, 2020 Well... Jared Porter said that the wants a lot of redundancy. Assuming the Mets sign LeMahieu and don't trade for Lindor or Arenado, they would have LeMehieu, Rosario, Gimenez, McNeil, and Davis covering three positions. That is a lot of depth. And maybe they're pivoting to LeMahieu over Springer (if in fact they are) because, if there's no DH, they'll want a spot in the outfield for Smith?
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2020 Posted December 23, 2020 McNeil can play second or third, and LeMahieu is an above average second baseman. Davis is a terrible third baseman who did not hit well enough last year to justify guaranteeing him a starting job.The combination of Cohen, the money we are not paying Cano, and not breaking the bank to get a catcher means this should not be an either/or when talking about LeMahieu and Springer.

batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2020 Posted December 23, 2020 Agreed. It's an upgrade and that's what should matter most. But how do you break Cohen's bank? It'd take a heck of a lot more than a baseball player. Or 200 baseball players.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2020 Posted December 23, 2020 The presence of JD Davis shouldn't be considered a hindrance to pursuing LeMahieu ... hey, we'd be swapping out JD for DJ
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 23, 2020 Posted December 23, 2020 The law of consonant conservation suggests it would be hard to retain them both simultaneously.
