You could still join in. You just won't have video - meaning you can't see or be seen. But you'll have audio.

Don't have a camera on my computer, forgot about the phone option since I only use it for calling, texting and checking my email.

If I get out of work early enough (or if the meeting lasts long enough) I'll try to be on it.

Actually, I take some of that back. Not having a camera on your PC, Mac, laptop or whatever means that you won't be able to be seen by others. But you'll still be able to see them (so long as their cameras are on).

Right. I was on a baseball one a week or so ago and there were participants who either

didn't have a camera or I think you can also choose not to broadcast from your camera.

So while I couldn't participate, I could be creepy and lurking!

But that's what I do in my day job, do I really want to be doing it again in my spare time?

And guess what I haven't gone shopping for yet?

=batmagadanleadoff post_id=40500 time=1594835954 user_id=68]I'll bet anything that it's mostly, if not all, the second option. I've seen many zoom calls, and always, there are people participating with their cameras turned off so that they purposely can't be seen.

Lol, I thought we were talking post-purchase pre-setup.

Skype is still around, i used it yseterday to record a podcast. Skype for business, which was a different thing for some confusing reason, was rolled into Teams.

If you're using your phone, do you have to somehow put it in selfie mode before or after you join, or does zoom do that automatically?

No. You can participate even without a computer camera. You can hear and also speak. And you can see everyone who has their video on. You just can't be seen, is all.

Here's what a zoom computer meeting would look like on your screen. Think of Hollywood Squares with every participant getting his or her own square.

[FIMG=444]https://www.technology.pitt.edu/sites/default/files/blog-images/ZoomMeeting.png[/FIMG]

But anyone without a camera or with their video turned off would be represented by a black square with no image. But you'd still be on the meeting, for all other purposes.

I know how ZOOM works and have been on it before ... just never from my home computer.

And I suspect I'd have to speak REALLY LOUDLY into my microphone-less monitor for the others in the group to hear me

... which brings me right back to the ability to listen in on the meeting but not really participate in any meaningful way.

Well, you didn't say that you also lacked a microphone until just now. So without video and audio, I guess you can't participate meaningfully. You can lurk, though, and watch everybody else.

I believe if one wants to Zoom on a android/apple device such as a phone it's

best done by downloading the app. Personally, I found the PC Zoom experience

much better than my device app experience.

I'm having second thoughts about this endeavor. I created an account tonight and

there's a 30 minutes for free thing and they say you can go up to 40 for free but 45

is the next option for a monthly fee so that makes no sense.

Meeting is cancelled. Thanks to everyone was willing to help me out.
