Throw back to Spring 1987 as https://www.villagevoice.com/2020/04/07/new-yorks-met-a-fans-notes-on-keith-hernandez/Pete Hamill profiles Keith Hernandez in The Village Voice.

Keith is Keith, mentally restless, detached from the concerns of lesser men, and bored by everything: Spring Training, leading off innings, prime time at the athletic club. He feels embarrassed for adult autograph hounds.

I give him the benefit of the doubt that he kicked coke back when he said he kicked coke. But it's amazing how back then right up to yesterday, you can always sense the addict's personality right under the surface.

Interesting that between the time of the reporting and the time of the story's publication, Dwight Gooden entered rehab.
