LWFS Old-Timey Member Posted February 24, 2020 Posted February 24, 2020 So... the newly snakelike ex-gigantic person Mr. Bumgarner has had quite the offseason job... and this literally https://theathletic.com/1629527/2020/02/23/meet-mason-saunders-the-secret-rodeo-identity-of-madison-bumgarner/>is not his first rodeo. (For non-subscribers, a summary is https://currently.att.yahoo.com/att/madison-bumgarner-reveals-uses-mason-023552928.htmlhere.)[bLOCKQUOTE]So, he devised "Mason Saunders." The surname is the maiden name of his wife, Ali. "Mason" is a shortened version of Madison, "something for my wife to call me when we were out in public to keep people from recognizing me. But you're going to ruin that for me."… Why the alias then? That was to protect his adventures from garnering too much attention outside the insular world of roping. (“I'm nervous about this interview right now,” Bumgarner said through a smile to a pair of reporters from The Athletic at one point. “I'm upset with both you two.”) If he competed as Madison Bumgarner, every phone camera in the arena would be trained on him, he said.[/bLOCKQUOTE]Curious, this general "aw, this is charming" vibe to the discussion about it... compared to the what-a-fuckup perception surrounding Yoenis' adventures in the Boar Wars; I wonder if he'll talk to the media about THAT.
LWFS Old-Timey Member Posted February 24, 2020 Author Posted February 24, 2020 For what it's worth, Mason Saunders' last ride probably https://mlb.nbcsports.com/2020/02/24/dbacks-gm-mike-hazen-wasnt-aware-madison-bumgarner-competed-in-rodeos/>isn't that far off in the future.[bLOCKQUOTE]There was one person who didn't have an immediate reaction last night: Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen, who just gave his starters/cowpoke a five-year, $85 million deal. And who did not, we just found out, know that Bumgarner was roping steers in his free time.[/bLOCKQUOTE]Interesting side thought: think Bumgarner's rodeo aspirations-- and desire to be closer to his horses-- had anything to do with his consideration of Arizona's offer?

Not that this would be the most logical rationalization.

Jeff Kent can ride his motorcycle all day long until an injury occurs.
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted February 24, 2020 Posted February 24, 2020 Well, of course the club cares what the player does or does not do: that's why they negotiate to have certain provisions in the contract in the first place. But it's not unfair to observe that nothing is likely to happen unless or until there's a reason the player can't perform. Of course a club is unlikely to spend the effort to monitor players around the clock. And of course a club would be unlikely to pursue action under the contract unless some prohibited activity results in the player being unable to perform.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted February 25, 2020 Posted February 25, 2020 I also haven't read the contracts. Do they actually prohibit the activities? I would guess they only convert the contract to non-guaranteed money if the player suffers an injury because of the activities.
