Actually, I'm thinking Fudgy the Whalen wasn't an official Mets camper anyhow, despite reports to the contrary.

So, either I'm wrong (as I often am) about Seagirt being out of options, or he has to go through waivers.

Also, we missed the re-signing of Travis Taijeron. Travis landed just in time for baseball action to end, so he hasn't seen any Spring Training activity.



He joins a crowded field of veteran first base/dh types slated for Syracuse, along with Joey Terdoslavich and Matt Adams. He's probably the best outfielder of the bunch, at least having the athletic skills, if not the instincts, for a corner spot. Whichever one might float out there, he'll make it harder for the Mets to keep Tim Tebow at AAA.

In perhaps the easiest-to-miss transaction of the offseason that won't end, we missed AAA outfielder Rymer Liriano being signed away by the Mariners over a month ago. Rymer, to say we hardly knew you barely does it justice.

A big purge is supposedly on the way, with the Mets expected to announce a pile of organizational names that they are releasing in anticipation of minor league contraction.

My sense is that the Mets' most threatened affiliate is Kingsport.

Minor League baseball in Kingsport, Tennessee goes all the way back to 1921, though there was a gap from 1926 to 1937.

Buzz seems to be about that Brooklyn is going to become the AA affiliate. I don't know if that's more than buzz, or whether its a short-term or long-term scenario.

Only news I've been able to gather is that recidivist Mets minor leaguer Rob Whalen has been let go, and (so far) Tim Tebow hasn't.

They're not going to play minor league ball this year (other than the "taxi squad" players that aren't on the active roster but have to be ready) and next year each franchise will have 2 or 3 fewer minor league affiliates so they might as well cut the players who aren't prospects now. That's not me, that's Manfred if he told you the truth.

I believe you are correct. It is sad to see. These are baseball players who just grind it out til they can't no more. Many many of them will be a portion of the 40 million newly unemployed. Brap

The part cut off at the bottom of the left side continues to say that he believes that the "celebrity" put on the team to sell tickets actually got a cut of those increased ticket sales. And, while that person got paid, others lost their jobs.


Then the next year, they made a mockery of our team by putting a celebrity on it to sell more tickets. I saw players lose their jobs because of it. We weren't playing to win, we were playing to make everyone else money. Not the players. We never saw a cut. Well, allegedly that one player did.

I had read that the minor leaguers have been getting a stipend of $400 a month during the outage. Many of them on that list probably would have been cut after spring training anyhow, but 30 players getting 400 bucks each for 2 months is less than half the cost of a waiver claim.

Andrew was a second round pick, so he presumably got a nice hefty signing bonus. He begrudges Tebow getting paid too. If Tebow did negotiate some extra $$ in his contract, well, good for him, why shouldnt he?

It seems a lot of the releasees were vets in on a one-year deal. Your Taijerons and your Terdasloviches and even the occasional Sebastian Elizalde. Also a bunch of guys who are doing decently but are a couple years behind their age contingent.



Saddest to see go are guys who only recently fought their way back from the indy minors and probably thought their careers were back on track.



And of course, nobody wants to see Phil Capra go, taking the best face in the minor leagues with him.

Mets Roster Central is quickly moving to adapt to the ad-libbed standards of the announced truncated 2020 season, but roster rules will apparently be as such:


  • Teams will open second spring season with 60 camp invites. As they trim down, they will ship out their players to an alternative site. Many will use their AAA facilities for this. The Mets and the Yankees have the options to use their New York-Penn League affiliate facilities, as they are nearby. I suspect shipping out the cuts is as much about limiting virus exposure as anything.

  • Those 60 will be the only players available for the team to use during the season.

  • Training at their home fields will be a challenge because unlike spring training sites, there isn't a complex of multiple diamonds adjacent to each other. So I'm guessing St. Johns and/or Christ the King facilities may come into play.

  • My impression is that the full 40-man roster will stay with the team, allowing transactions to be instantaneous.

  • When the season begins, teams will have a 30-man active roster.

  • Two weeks into the campaign, teams will cut to 28 players.

  • Two more weeks, it finally gets whittled down to 26.

  • Maybe I'm missing something, but it's unclear if the September 1 roster expansion will happen. I would guess something like it will.

I guess the 5/28 release have to due with monor league contraction/disruption



I feel bad for the youngest guys who really have nowhere to go. New careers for more than a few
