Little-observed side effect of the Carlos Beltran appointment: In the great tradition of players coming back to manage the team with which they enjoyed a long and/or successful tenure, he has apparently (at least, if you believe the press greeting), been re-issued 15, the number he played under.



This number, of course, had been seemingly mothballed in preparation for the debut of Tim Tebow. As soon as Tebow was signed, you knew Matt Reynolds was a goner. Luis Guillorme grabbed the number for a callup in 2018, but that was just until Asdrubal Cabrera ceded him #13, the most desired number among Venezuelan infielders.



So, that left the number in reserve for Tebow from the start of 2019, the year he would have been expected to make his debut, if there was to be one. As is well known, Tebow spent most of the first half of the summer playing terribly, and a good chunk of the second half hurt (for the second year in a row).



Not to spend too much time reading tea leaves, but I see Beltran's number assignment as a strong indication that the Tebow experiment may well be winding down.

Luis Guillorme knows. Someone intrepid could probably ask him why he switched from 15 to 13 in the offseason.



It 'might' not be nefarious? Maybe? Maybe Guillorme worked it out with Tebow when they played together in Spring Training this year, and because Luis had claim to the number until then, no one else actually picked it up. Could just be coincidence.



Guillorme's listed as 13 in the spring training logs I've found. It's possible that's back filled (B-R seems to think he wore 15 from 2018-2019, but definitely not in the majors. I saw video of 4/7 with him in 13.) I haven't searched for spring training video though.
