If you get brought up mid-season, you don't get the chance to have a full rookie season measured against the league or against history, but the next year your rookie eligibility is spent.

So here's the rookie years of such persons in Metdom, if you measure their rookie season as beginning the day they come up and ending a calendar year later.

That batting average would have led the league in either of the two seasons he straddled there. Rookies who've won a batting average title (at least since 1900) is a two-man club: Tony Oliva and Ichiro Suzuki.

His hit total would have been the 11th best in Mets history, and the most for any Mets rookie by 30.

His hit-by pitch total would have been the sixth-highest ever garnered by a rookie (but not a Mets record, as Pete Alonso got hit by 21 this season).

Looks like it wasn't Darryl Strawberry's rookie homer record that Peter Alonso broke, although once we give the same treatment to Strawberry tomorrow, he's probably going to show 30 or more. But look at Sugar's double total! Mets rookie record to this day!

When you review a player's game logs on Baseball-Reference, you can scroll to a date and get the player's career statistics up to and including that date. So I go to the day before the first anniversary of the player's promotion, and BOOM! chaka-laka-laka ...

It isn't enough just to waste time on the Mets. You've got to COMMIT.

Looks like Straw had been the Mets rookie homerun record-holder up to this season after all.

Look at that low HbP total compared to P-Bear and Squirrelly's rookie totals.

Young Darryl legging out those triples! I saw one of them, plus a homer, live in June of ‘83. Felt like the future was pulling into third base.

Let's take a look at the sort-of rookie seasons of the Dan Warthen-era starting pitchers.

Stupid stupid constants and variables. I was only able to suss out the data up to the balk column. So I added those rate columns for Harvey. Once they worked good, I pasted them into the other player's profiles, but they all were divided by Harvey's innings load.

I will fixee. It really shouldn't be this hard for me. I think my brain is atrophying.

OK, this should be accurate. If it is, I'll replace the two table fails above.

What jumps out is all the pounding of the strike zone they were all doing, except Wheeler. I like to think that's Bartolo's influence. It's probably more likely to be Warthen, or somebody they all met in the development pipeline, like Regan or Al Jackson, or Frank Viola. But Wheels was injured for a big chunk of Bartolomania, so I'm thinking it's Colón.

This 162-game rookie/not-rookie season was brought to you by ... Steve Henderson!

His actual rookie season, though only 99 games, was enough to leave him only a hair behind Andre Dawson in the Rookie of the Year voting.

For a few minutes there, it looked like the Tom Seaver trade, as unpopular as it was, might be a trade the Mets would win.

I had a feeling it might've been Henderson. You hardly ever hear talk anymore about Henderson's wondrous magical first five or six months as a Met.
