Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2018 Posted October 10, 2018 For "international slot money".http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/24950423/miami-marlins-trade-reliever-kyle-barraclough-washington-nationalsThe deal helps the Marlins in their pursuit of top international free-agent Victor Victor Mesa, a Cuban outfielder who tried out for major league scouts at Marlins Park last week.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2018 Posted October 10, 2018 Tracking all the 'name' relievers that the Nationals have brought in over the last few years -- off-season, in-season, trading-deadline -- might be an interesting project, especially since many ofthem really didn't work out like they hoped.Maybe if I get some time ...
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 10, 2018 Posted October 10, 2018 Bring back Ray King!Let's get some Gary Majewski!
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2018 Author Posted October 10, 2018 I want the Mets to be in on Victor Victor!
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2018 Posted October 11, 2018 While the Mets figure out who their GM will be, the Nationals hot-headed GM does something to help the team.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2018 Posted October 11, 2018 If you call bringing in somebody with a negative WAR helping the team, then sure.

I'm saying that WSH has improved (to some degree) already for next year and the Mets will likely not start doing so until they hire someone and he/she gets acclimated.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 11, 2018 Posted October 11, 2018 I tend to think making a trade isn't necessarily improving. And not making a trade isn't necessarily standing still.La bassa stagione è lunga e difficile.
HahnSolo Old-Timey Member Posted October 11, 2018 Posted October 11, 2018 When does trading season re-open? Or does it ever close?I mean, I don't remember a trade completed during the LDS before, so maybe I just assumed you couldn't do it until a certain time.

That's the key. That's why this is linked to Victor Victor Mesa. Him and his brother were only deemed eligible to be signed on 9/14. So Marlins basically are looking to up the cash they have to use, and have been seeing who they can sell off for it.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted October 22, 2018 Posted October 22, 2018 To the Marlins belong the Victors -- Mesas, that is.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted October 23, 2018 Posted October 23, 2018 I think the Marlins did more to help their team than the Nationals did.

But he is committing to a rebuild, and investing heavily in young talent. This is the right move. Barraclough does nothing for him. The international talent does.I hope that it all blows up in his face. And ultimately they will have to draw to be a consistent contender, but I don't like that he seems to have a plan and is executing that plan. Not all rebuilds work, but it certainly did for Kansas City and Houston.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted October 24, 2018 Posted October 24, 2018 The Orioles really did suffer for not having a GM in place, as they had the slot money to compete with the Marlins but nobody to make the deal.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted October 24, 2018 Posted October 24, 2018 Junior-naming is kind of a pet peeve of mine; my thinking is, it's hard enough not to project yourself onto your same-gender kid without calling him by your name. But I understand it.That said, naming your kids Victor Jr. AND Victor Victor is, like, Children's Services-phone call-worthy.
