Drew Smith: 62, presumably his way of saying, "I am an Original."

Kevin Kaczmarski: 16, presumably his way of wanting to be known as Mr. K.

Come to think of it, the Mets harbored two Smiths in 1964: Dick and Charley, each of them a major contributor to the legendary "did they win?" 19-1 romp at Wrigley Field that season. No need for distinguishing initials that season, given the mores of the times.

Other Mets who have checked into motels under fake names: Pete Smith, Joe Smith.

But they did use middle initials when they had two pitchers named Bob Miller, but I don't recall if they were on the uniforms.

Reliever Tyler Bashlor reportedly on his way for tonight's game.

Corresponding move: a heightening sense of resignation.

Tyler Bashlor: career 1.000 batting average. That can't be under-emphasized in Mickey Callaway's "Get relievers as many at-bats as you can" regime.

Crikey.

Your reminder that the record for most pitchers used in a season is 40. Bashlor would be #25.

I can't wait until some crazy offseason quiz here in the Pool in 2022 when Greg guesses "Chris Beck and Tyler Bashlor" to a trivia question and we're all like "no, you totally made those guys up."

"Burly" Bashlor!

Gets no. 49.

Does anyone remember when David Letterman did a bit on the 86 Mets cashing in on their world series fame, and for evidence he talked about an autobio of Ed Hearn? I'm trying to remember if the title was I'M ED HEARN or THE ED HEARN STORY

Ironic of course as Ed Hearn eventually did do a book!

There's more than one Craig Kimbrel comparison out there, and while that sort of thing should be taken with a lost shaker of salt, there are some prospect watchers who are certainly bullish on the guy.

This bullpen carousel is kinda making me a madman.

Blevins has gone on he bereavement list, as his grandmother has died. Sewald is back in the interim.

Flexen (not on roster at the moment) announced as Sunday's starter. Wheeler and Oswalt will take the doubleheader on Monday.

Drew Smith sent down to accommodate the no more than four innings to be thrown by Chris Flexen.

In the last two days...

Rhame up and down as 26th man

Flexen down, Conlon up

Frazier DL'd, Kelly up

Beck DFA'd, Blevins reinstated

Gagnon up; Sewald down

Ty Kelly became the 46th Recidivist Met on Tuesday, the third this season, joining the raging success stories that are the second comings of Jay Bruce and Jason Vargas.

That's one more for the recidivist list. And I guess one can make a technical argument for Conlon as a recidivist Met too.

We will accept Conlon in the satellite group that includes Terry Leach, Mike Birkbeck and Pedro Feliciano (twice) -- their stay as Mets interrupted by time in at least one other organization without having played for another MLB team in the interim. Conlon's asterisk is even fainter given that he never played in the minors for the Dodgers, either, but he did go out for that smoke.

Assuming the starting lineup isn't a practical joke, tonight will make it 576 regular-season Mets games between Mets appearances for Matt (591, counting the Mets' fifteen den Dekkerless postseason games in 2015 and 2016). That puts MdD somewhere between Bobby Bonilla and Dave Kingman in the excused absence rankings.

Oh, and Rhame is beginning his sixth separate stint on the active roster tonight. Quite the stable outfit they're running out in Queens.

The Mets are currently on track for their worst season since 1993.

Seven current Mets were born in 1993.

It's almost like 2018 is asking for this.

The rest of baseball resists the temptation to add Chris Beck to its ranks. Las Vegas is, thus, where he's at.

Conlon optioned to accommodate the reThorization of the rotation.

It looks like a few teams are taking advantage of the All-Star break to add a bench player or another RP by sending SPs to the minors (e.g. STL did that with Luke Weaver who pitched on Wednesday and therefore won't pitch again until after the break). Could the Mets do that? They can't send down deGrom because it might impact his ASG status. Noah? Wheeler after today? It's likely not a big deal but if you can add a 3d catcher or really anyone who could be useful perhaps you should try.

Yo-Yo'ing back to the roster by 7:05 Friday night, according to all informed speculation: Yo!

Yo'ing in the other direction: Dom Smith, it is guessed. But we shall see.

Posted

Yo indeed back, with Dom goin' down.

But don't fear a lack of Smith, for Drew has returned. Leaving us, for now, is Corey Oswalt, making rotation room for the infinitely worse-performing (but better-compensated) Jason Vargas.

Jeff McNeil wasn't in the Las Vegas starting lineup tonight.
Just sayin'.

In case you were missing Paul Sewald, yearn no longer. He's taking Familia's spot on the roster if not his role in the bullpen.

Between Ricco's inane comments and Noah going on the DL, the game isn't for 3 hours and I'm already losing it.

I saw "going on the DL with hand, foot and mouth disease" and I thought it was some weird beat writer running gag.

It's not. Oswalt will take his spot.
