Nothing is guaranteed, but we're going up against those dang Phils with Jacob deGrom. And Jacob deGrom is 3-0 with a 1.87 ERA. Moreover, for his career, he's 19-8 / 1.97 with 283 strikeouts in 260 innings during the day. That's the equivalent of a Cy Young-winning season, from Orel Hershiser or Greg Maddux or somebody. Over a career.

Nothing is guaranteed, and yeah, this ballpark cheats, but I like that we got him going. I do!

Baumann is returned to AAA even though he would be more likely to be used today than Vargas. Since Vargas is being "skipped" in the rotation (skipping is fun so it's such a nice way of saying "ignored due to a failure to perform at a major league level") and there are two days off this week, can't they find some reason to put him on the 10-day DL?

Almost forgot Jake had to be activated. And he was, at the expense of not yet an official Met Buddy Baumann.

Ah revoir, No. 77. We'll hardly know ye until Mrs. Blevins is reporting contractions.

Really not a bad idea. Let him hang around and throw simulated games under the watchful eye of the brain trust -- or the watchful brain of the eye trust.

Is Baumann a "Phantom Met? Did he ever get put on the 25? Or did his suspension prevent that?

He was on the roster but suspended Friday night. He was active for a game that never started Saturday. If he never returns, he probably rates his own category.

You're probably rooting for that so you could write it up. Weird. Just when you think you've seen it all.

It would actually bother me into Mets eternity if he doesn't come back and pitch. Never seems right when a Met is so close to happening yet never happens.

Hey, we're getting under way!

Gary Cohen reminding me that this is the same as last night's lineup except for switching Nimmo and Conforto.

Al the lefty batters reach to load the bases, but both our righty batters can't touch this guy.

Let's hope Conforto remembers he's a lefty.

Wow! Jacob deGrom on a pace to throw a 405-pitch shutout!

Mickey disagrees.

He threw 44 pitches in the first. They're being prudent.

Even if I was committed to pulling deGrom, I'm not sure I'd burn a bench player there. deGrom can give you a good at-bat.

On the other hand, maybe they don't want him swinging the bat anyhow.

Mesoraco with the frisky little athletic 2-6-4 DP.

Between this and the Friday night HR, he's already arguably been this season's most valuable wearer of the tools d'ignorance.

So we pushed Thor back three days to give DeGrom one inning?

As it turned out, yeah. But of course you don't know that going in.

No, they pushed him back because he got loose yesterday and they decided to treat it as an outing.

Meanwhilst, Mets take the lead on a kapowie by Céspedes.

So just as Cespedes was teeing off, I was in the midst of composing a post pointing out that the Mets offense had scored in just 3 of the previous 37 innings, a streak which began right after they had
scored in opening five frames of the first game in Cincy. But after putting up a goose egg in the final four innings of that one, they've scored in just one inning in each of the next three, now four, games:
- a 2-spot in the 6th inning of our 7-2 loss in Cincy
- a single run in the 3rd of the Wednesday afternoon 2-1 10th inning loss
- and then the 3 runs via the Conforto and Mesaroco HRs in the 9th of Friday's game.
- and now, so far anyway, once in six frames here so now it's 4 non-zeros half-innings out of 38
