Tied 5-5 in the ninth with Ashville this evening, The Columbia Fireflies are off to a 4-3 start, sitting two games off the pace in the South Atlantic League's Southern Division. Top prospect Anthony Kay anchors the starting rotation, while breakthrough candidate Blake Tiberi leads the offense. The corner outfield slots belong to 2017 draftees and Stanford teammates Quinn Brodey and Matt Winnaker, but the truth is that the infielders are all doing the hitting so far.

You want a good name for a closer? Better than "Vic Black" or "Jack Leathersich"? How about "Cannon Chadwick"?!

Well, the Cannon Chadwick dream was nice while it lasted, but the dream is dead. The Mets have fired the Cannon, as it were. Chadwick has been released.

On the upside, and there is an upside, the Flies won tonight for their fifth victory in their last six contests. Moreover, on Wednesday, David Peterson took the win, going six innings and yielding just one run on four hits and two walks, striking out four, for his first victory as a professional, 10 months after the Mets made him their #1 draft choice out of Oregon. He's 6'6" and 240 and I don't want to say lefthanded Noah Syndergaard, but I guess I just did.

First baseman Jeremy Vasquez (.990 OPS) and secondbaseman Walter Rasquin (.943) are leading the offense. Vasquez has been particularly impressive, already netting 14 walks for a .469 on-base percentage. Along with Dominic Smith, Pete Alonso, and Dash Winningham, the Mets actually seem to have a first base prospect at every level of the full-season leagues.

On the pitching side, starter Joe Cavallero has given up just three earned runs over 19 innings in his first three starts, going 2-0 while striking out 18. The relief corps is led by Carlos Hernandez, a gravely serious Dominican from the magical town of San Pedro de Marcoris. In four games, CH has thrown 5.2 scoreless innings, surrendering but one hit, striking out 11, and walking two. That's not pitching, that's plowing.

And today, David Peterson has been matched by 2016 first round pick Anthony Kay. The lefthander picked up his first professional victory today, throwing six shutout innings against Hickory, yielding just three hits and a walk while striking out five. The performance lowered the Stony Brook native' ERA to 1.69, with opponents hitting .164 against him through 16 innings. Two perfect innings from Carlos Hernandez and one more from Trey Cobb finished up the show for the Fireflies.

Through 71 plate appearances, Columbia secondbaseman Blake Tiberi is reaching base at a .465 clip.

First place was a fun ride, but a 3-4 week coupled with a run of hot play by Augusta has dropped our Fireflies into a tie for third. But four teams sit within 2 1/2 games of each other, so expect that to change this weekend. Don't like it? Well, be glad you're not a fan of the Boston-affiliated Greenville Drive, current losers of 13 in a row, sitting 11 1/2 games out in the South Atlantic League's South Division.

The reign atop the leader board for firstbasemen Jeremy Vasquez is getting stupid. Upping his OPS to 1.074 since our last update, the young Firefly is third in the league in batting average and second in on-base percentage. I don't remember him lighting up preseason top prospect lists, but let's watch and see if he turns any heads for mid-season lists. He has now reached base in 20 straight games, easily a franchise record. Olerudian.

There haven't been a lot of transactions, but catcher Jay Jabs got demoted to the idle Brooklyn roster with the activation of starting pitcher Marcel Renteria this week. Jabs is repeating Columbia as he transitions from the outfield to catcher, but it's probably not a good sign that an organization that has lost their two major league catchers can't find a placement for him.

Joe Cavallaro is starting to get some momentum in the rotation, going 2-0 through three starts with a 1.89 ERA and 19 strikeouts. If you've got him starting and Carlos Hernandez (0.87 through 10 1/3 innings ... with a 17/2 strikeout walk ration!), it's a good day to bet on a Firefly victory.

But perhaps the guy you really want to keep your eye on Chris Viall. Viall is freaking 6'9", and while he has the inconsistent mechanics associated with lanky dudes, he's blowing folks away with 29 strikeouts through 14 1/3 innings. He was brilliant in his start this week, but took the loss.

A 3-4 day today with a double and homer has helped advance the cause of firstbaseman Jeremy Vasquez as the outstanding overall South Atlantic Leaguer, at least among offensive players. Jeremy now ranks first(.357) in batting average, first (.472) in on-base percentage, second (.582) in slugging, and first 1.053 in OPS. Jeremy has reached in ALL 29 games for the Fireflies in 2018. He has also had a four-walk game and a three-walk game.

All this has helped the Fireflies to a 5-game winning streak, leaving them 5-1 on the week, and moving them into third place in the South Atlantic League Southern Division, red-hot and only 3 1/2 games behind the first-place Augusta Green Jackets.

Let's talk for a few about the The Stanford Swing. Stanford has a philosophy to coach all their players into the same mechanics, teaching them the same swing, level, legs bent, bat coming through the zone flat, with a slight tuck. It's helped make the program really good, but the jury is out on whether it's preparing their players successfully for pro ball.

Last season, the Mets selected two Standford corner outfielders in the third and fifth rounds â€” Quinn Brodey and Matt Winaker â€” both batting lefty and throwing lefty, and both practitioners of the school swing. Both also had pretty tepid debuts for Brooklyn last year, OPS-ing in the mid-.600s. But after similarly slow starts this season, both are coming on strong. Winaker has posted a .373 on-base percentage, while Brodey (who is regularly starting in center) is leading the team with five homers.

A 5-4, extra-inning Mother's Day win saved the day following a ninth-inning blown save by Trey Cobb, and salvaged a 2-4 week following some tough losses to Hickory, leaving the 'Flies only three games off the pace in the South Atlantic League Southern Division.

The bumpy road this past week belies some solid starting they've been getting, including recent turns by Yeizo Campos (4 shutout innings, 2 hits, 4 strikeouts, 0 walks); Joe Cavallaro (5.2 IP, 3 ER, 7 H, 3 BB, 7 SO), Tony Dibrell (6.1 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 8 SO); and especially David Peterson (7 shutout innings, 3 H, 1 BB, 8 SO).

Catcher Scott Manea has played little and succeeded even less since signing with the Mets as an undrafted free agent in 2016. But to call his performance this season a breakout would be an understatement. The Massachusetts native has been an absolute terror on Sally League pitchers this season, posting a .319 / .484 / .528 // 1.012. That Bondsian OBP would be leading the circuit by 55 points if he had a few more plate appearances. Even so, the official league lead belongs to teammate Blake Tiberi (.429), with fellow 'Fly Jeremy Vasquez coming in third (.416).

Peterson went seven innings tonight, giving up but a single first inning run on two hits.

Ended up on the wrong side of a 1-0 loss, however, but he might be moving up soon.

Two late launchers finally get started on their 2018 season, as Oliver Pascual, who had been on the Columbia roster on paper, gets activated and immediately promoted to Binghamton, and Wuilmer Becerra, who had technically (if only technically) been on the Las Vegas roster, gets activated and immediately shipped down to Columbia. I don't know if these guys were hurt or just judged by the Mets to be a pair of fellows who could benefit from an extra seven weeks of instruction. The latter scenario makes at least some sense, in Becerra's case, because his future career seems to be on the edge of a knife right now. Dude has to show at least some power.

Among the guys still waiting to be launched are Tucker Tharpe and Kendall Coleman, the latter of whom came over from the Yankees in the L.J. Mazzilli deal.

A tough 2-1 loss today to the Charleston RiverDogs wasted an outstanding effort by David Peterson. Petey went seven innings, giving up only 1 earned run (an unearned run scored partially as a result of a Rigoberto Terrazas error) on 5 hits, 0 walks, and 7 strikeouts. Look for Petey and his 1.91 ERA to get a mid-season promotion to St. Lucie. A perfect ninth for reliever Aaron Ford included two strikeouts and lowered his ERA to an even more impressive 1.59.

The loss dropped the Flies to 3-3 on the week and five games off the pace, in third place in the South Atlantic League South Division.

Seriously cooling off has been catcher Scott Manea, who is now 0-for-his-last-16. It's a testimony to how sizzling he was before this dip that he is still leading the circuit in on-base percentage by 17 points(!) at .440.

Two other recent arrivals with the team include Yeizo Campos and Taylor Henry. They not only have four last names between them; they also have 10 innings pitched without letting a single enemy cross the plate, allowing but 5 hits and 1 walk against 8 strikeouts in their 10 innings.

The Columbia Fireflies won tonight with sort of a backwards deployment of their pitchers. Lefty Jake Simon, just off the disabled list, went the first 3 1/3 innings, giving up 1 run on 3 hits, before yielding to Yeizo Campos to get the final two outs of the fourth inning. The Flies then turned the game over to Briam Campusano, who took them home over the final 5 shutout innings, giving up 1 hit, walking none, and striking out 5. Charleston was totally Briamed.

Equally remarkable was the line put up Blake Tiberi. The six-foot, lefty-hitting second baseman (he DH'd tonight) went 1-1 with a single ... and walked 4 times. Blakie, despite hitting only .276, is the Brandon Nimmo of the South Atlantic League, leading the circuit in walks. In fact, the top of the OBP chart looks like this:

Excited as you might have been during the last update about the un-scored-upon-ness of Taylor Henry and Yeizo Campos, thrilled you must be now, as the two have combined for 17 2/3 innings and a 0.00 ERA. They've walked 3 and struck out 18 between them, and I don't know why Sally League batters even bother.

The win was the fifth in the last six for the Lightning Bugs, and the eighth in the last 11, and it allowed the Fireflies to keep pace with the Lexington Legends â€” the two teams tied for third in the South Atlantic League Southern Division, five games behind the league-leading Augusta GreenJackets.

We haven't visited Firefly Theatre in a bit. Let's check in!

A strong start by Anthony Kay (one run in 6 2/3 innings, striking out 7 while walking 2). His effort was a big help as the Fireflies bested the Augusta GreenJackets, with Carlos Hernandez picking up the win, and Stephen Villines the save throwing scoreless work the rest of the way. Hernandez also stranded two runners he picked up. Catcher Ali Sanchez went 2-3 with a double and the game-breaking two-run homer in the eighth, ultimately plating three runs.

The real story in Columbia, though is being written by QuebeÃ§ois outfielder Raphael Gladu. The Firefly leadoff hitter went 2-4 last night, extending his team record hitting streak to a jaw-dropping 22 games. Je ne fais que des lancers pour frapper et obtenir de trÃ¨s bons coups sur la balle", explique Gladu. "HonnÃªtement, c'est aussi simple que Ã§a, mais je suis heureux d'aider l'Ã©quipe de toutes les faÃ§ons possibles."

He has raised his batting average 67 points during his streak, and his prospect status at least as much.

Native Floridian Joe Cavallaro, meanwhilst, just keeps turning in good start after good start. His last one was good-plus though. After missing a turn with a stressed fluffernutter, Joe took the hill against the Charleston RiverDogs, giving up two runs in seven innings, striking out 9 and walking 0. While it was a no-decision, he now enjoys a 6-1 record with a 2.26 ERA. Run, Joe, run.

All this adds up to a .500 record, however, with the Flies sitting at 29-29, six games out of the South Atlantic League Southern Division. But they take on the first-place Jackets again today, with a red-hot David Peterson (1.93 ERA) takng the bump. The team also has enjoyed a period of relative stability, as the higher leagues have been replenished from the stockpile of extended spring training, rather than drawing from the Fireflies.

South Atlantic League Southern Division All-Stars defeated their Northern Division enemies with the help of a handful of Columbia Fireflies, 9-5.

On the offensive side of the ledger, firstbaseman Jeremy Vasquez totally pulled a Mazzilli, entering the game late and coming up smelling like roses, garnering a walk and a ninth-inning homer. This more than made up for the 0-2 game catcher Scott Manea put in, even counting the stolen base he allowed.

Among the pitchers, badass prospect David Peterson was unavailable, having already been promoted to the Florida State League, but his rotation mate Joe Cavallaro was more than qualified with a 7-1 record and a 2.06 ERA, and was in fact given the start for the Southern squad.

Unfortunately that start was limited to a single inning in which he gave up a run on two hits. Fortunately teammates Stephen Villines (struck out the only batter he faced) and Trey Cobb (came on in the ninth with a runner on and got the final two outs) made up for that showing.

The league gets today off and the season resumes tomorrow with the 34-33 Fireflies hosting the Lakewood BlueClaws.

The Columbia Fireflies finished a single game above .500 in the South Atlantic League first half, but only five games off the pace in the South Atlantic League Southern Division. True to form, they've started the second half at 7-6, with two new teams ahead of them as they sit only 1 1/2 games out, having dropped the first game of a three-game set hosting Greenville, but excited to get back at it today with the starter as-yet unannounced. Now having graduated both David Peterson and Anthony Kay, the second-half Flies will be pressed to offer the kind of rotation sizzle that they had in the first half, but they are still a solid team, and Thomas Szapucki could be returning soon from Tommy John surgery, but that's always touch and go (oh-oh-oh).

Outfielder Quinn Brodey is back with a vengeance. The Stanford alum recently delivered a first-inning grand salami against the Augusta Greenjackets and has hit in eight of his last 10 as he tries to rebound from a lackluster first half. The power is there, but the strikeouts have piled up as well. That's not the Standford way, Quinn!

Joining the team for the second half is secondbaseman Dionis Paulino, who has gone .296 / .296 / .667 // .963 with two homers in his first seven games in the full-season leagues. Welcome, Dionis!

Another latecomer making a mark is outfielder Walter Rasquin, tearing into the ball to the tune of .298 / .353 / .468 // .821 in 13 games since returning from a PED supension. I told Walter to clean up his act, and he just smiled and said, "I'm just 22 and I don't mind dying."

Which was weird. But let's hope for a productive and suspension-free second half out of Wally.

With the mid-season promotions having come and gone, Joe Cavallaro has got to be at least a little disappointed to see the word COLUMBIA still stitched across his jersey, but there's an upside. The organization's (so-far) breakthrough pitcher of the year (8-2, 2.09 with 82 strikeouts and 26 walks in 77 1/3 innings now has a pretty clear path to the much Sterling Award for Columbia's outstanding pitcher, and may even challenge Justin Dunn and company for the organizational award. Sterling sterling is no guarantee of a big league future, but if you ask Robert Gsellman and P.J. Conlon, it sure makes a nice calling card.

Lastly, Carlos Hernandez continues to be a flaming missile of love out of the bullpen, his stat line as extraordinary as his name is ordinary. He has now thrown 12 straight scoreless over his last seven appearances, lowering his ERA to 1.23 over 29 1/3 innings. He cares not a whit for South Atlantic League batters, and if the Lightning Bugs take the second half title, Hernandez will be the Fly that lights up the night like none other.

Firefly Theater ainâ€™t what it used to be, what with the Columbia Fireflies losing six of their last nine.

Most of the Flies offense has gotten caught in the winds of change, with top hitters Jeremy Vasquez and Scott Manea being promoted to St. Lucie, and sluggingâ€™ infielder/outfielder Walter Rasquin off rehabbing following a 50-game suspension.

What the team does have is Zach Rheams. A 2018 draftee out of Texas Tech with power out the ass, Rheams is only 8-for-39 so far with Columbia, but (a) 6 of those 8 hits have been for extra bases (2 homers and 4 doubles) and ( heâ€™s the first 2018 draftee to even be playing this high, despite going in the 27th round. His homers arenâ€™t measured in feet, but miles, but he seems suited for DH, and the Mets donâ€™t need one of those.

Tony Dibrell has more than a devil of a smile. With Anthony Kay and Joe Cavallaro and David Peterson all promoted, TD now has the number-one slot in the Columbian rotation. And heck if he doesnâ€™t deserve it, with his 3.17 ERA (ninth in the league, among qualifiers) endowed by an impressive 110 strikeouts in 96 2/3 innings, against 43 walks.

But thereâ€™s a new sheriff in town. Luc Rennie, signed out of indy ball (Evansville Otters), a source the Mets are pretty aggressive in drawing from, Cool Hand has knocked â€˜em dead in his first 4 appearances (3 starts), and has given up just 2 earned runs in his first 21 2/3 innings. When you put up a 0.83 ERA, Firefly Theater takes notice. When you strike out 28 and walk only 3, Firefly Theater gives you a writeup. Rennie is reported to have an average (89-91) fastball and a get-me-over curve, but heâ€™s also reported to have broken the Columbia record by striking out 14 (in 7 innings) in his last start. So weâ€™re going to have to get the scouts to report back on this one.

Maybe when they get Rasquin back, thingsâ€™ll click, but this mushy spell has undermined a solid start to the second half, leaving the ColaFlies 4 games off the pace in the tightly packed South Atlantic League Southern Division, mired in sixth place of seven teams.

And thatâ€™s not the greatness that they were meant for.

David Miranda wasn't the biggest name from the 2018 draft class, coming in Round 25 out of Florida Atlantic. But when the lefty outfielder got promoted from Brooklyn to Columbia on August 5, he became the first member of his class to reach the full-season leagues.

You'd figure he'd be scrambling just to keep his head above water, but today, he soared, going 5-for-5 against The DelMarVa Shorebirds. His offensive show included a double and the eventual game-winning RBI in the eighth, putting Columbia on top 8-7, which was the final score.

The big night has launched Miranda to a jaw-dropping .545 / .583 / .636 // 1.220 line through 24 South Atlantic League trips to the plate so far.

David Miranda. He has the right to remain awesome.

Sitting at 64-69, The Columbia Fireflies wrap up their season this afternoon with Grateful Dead Day. It's not enough that it's Labor Day, so the team has to dress like a bunch of noodle dancers. It's a damn shame the season has to end now, as the squad is coming off of one of their more remarkable performances, as 2017 fourth-rounder Tony Dibrell took the mound against the Augusta Greenjackets (a rare team in the South Atlantic League that wasn't named after insects), and gave up just one hit in six innings, walking three and striking out nine. That was followed by three innings of one-hit relief by 2017 21st-rounder Aaron Ford, walking none and striking out eight.

Let me repeat that: Ford faced 10 batters, and struck out eight of them, with one of the only two guys to put the ball in play reaching safely. They should make guys play without gloves again.

Being a pair of Mets prospects, Dibrell and Ford got little support for their two-hit shutout, withe the Fireflies netting only two hits of their own, but they managed to push a run across in the third for the 1-0 win. Dibrell finishes at 7-6 with a 3.50 ERA, striking out 147 in 131.0 innings (10.1 per nine), while walking 54 (3.7 per nine). Ford finishes at 2-2 with a save and a 2.03 ERA, striking out 32 in 26 2/3 innings (10.8 per nine), while walking (DIG THIS!) 2 (0.67 per nine).

The outstanding player is one of three dudes. Take your pickle.

A big chunk of Vasquez' performance came in the first half. Manea has the bonus of catching and throwing out 37.7% of would-be basestealers.

David Peterson (1-4, 1.82 with 57 strikeouts and 12 walks in 59 1/3 innings) and Joe Cavallaro (8-2, 2.09 with 83 strikeouts and 26 walks in 77 1/3 innings) had butt-kicking second half seasons for the pitching staff, but among guys who were there all or most of the year, the battle for outstanding pitcher is down to Dibrell and Ford above. Trey Cobb also dazzled with 10 saves and a 2.22 ERA in 28 1/3 innings, striking out 33 and walking an Eckerslian 4 batters.
