Five homers last night for Vegas in their 13-6 victory over Salt Lake: Bryce Brentz (15), Patrick Kivlehan (16), Matt den Dekker (13), Luis Guillorme (3), and Peter Alonso (16). Alonso now had 31 homers and 108 RBI across AA and AAA.

The Las Vegas tragic number nonetheless fell to 1 as the first-place El Paso Chihuahuas ran their winning streak to 7 games, looking to clinch their division running away.

The walkoff homer by Peter Alonso wasn't the only bright note the Las Vegas 51s season ended on. Outfielder Patrick Kivlehan and starting pitcher Drew Gagnon were named Pacific Coast League Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.

The final week of the season brought honors all across the organization, with Jhoan Urena of Binghamton David Peterson joining them as Eastern League Player of the Week, along wth St. Lucies David Peterson (Florida State League Pitcher of the Week) and Kingsport's Yoel Romero (Appalachian League Player of the Week).

That's the organization walking off with five of the 12 trophies available for the final week.

The 51s season, like that of the parent club, ended just as they were playing some of their best ball. The Aliens won 7 of their last 8, boosting them to 20-13 from August 1 until the end of the season. The late season surge allowed them to finish their season in the black, at 71-69, just above sea-level. This was their first winning season since 2014, and a 15-game improvement from 2017's 56-86 squad.

Maybe they’re leaving just as manager Tony DeFrancesco has figured out the trick to winning in an offense-happy park in an offense-happy league. But I guess few are sorry to leave Vegas, apart from the odd minor league vet slugger trying to pad his stats for one last go at the bigs, but those guys can still come to Vegas. They just have to sign with Oakland now.

Speaking of minor league vet sluggers, Zack Borenstein was a blue plate special for Vegas all summer. While Jeff McNeil came and went like a comet, and Peter Alonso did everything you could ask and more in his half season, it was Zack who gave a full season of productive fun, going .248 / .357 / .477 // .834 in 572 plate appearances, slugging 25 homers and driving in 90. The batting average ain’t a lot, but the combination of a sweet batting eye and slugging bat gets him named as our CPF Las Vegas 51 Offensive player of the year.

The 51s got an even better mercenary partial season from Patrick Kivlehan (.314 / .372 / .588 // .959) but he too came up short in the appearance department, joining the team for only 98 games and 390 plate appearances.

No, Borenstein is our man. The 51s agreed, even as Alonso won the fan-voted MVP, the team named Borenstein as winning their official MVP trophy.

Our pitcher of the year is Drew Gagnon, who is also the recipient of the team’s honor as well as being honored by the organization with the Las Vegas Sterling Award.

A 6-6 record with a 4.57 ERA seems like dry hash browns at first glance, but you translate that performance over 157 2/3 innings in Las Vegas (along with a win and six shutout innings in Bingo), and you have a guy who has stepped up. He’s sure seemed to have passed Chris Flexenberg on the organizational depth chart, and by the end of spring training, he may well have passed Corey Oswalt, who spent the last two months of the season the Mets’ rotation. That ERA, well, it’s comparable to what Noah Syndergaard and Jake deGrom put up their first time around in Las Vegas. Look at the strikeouts and walks. That’s 167 and 43, respectively, for Drew. That plays!

So, look for Drew — along with his namesake Drew Smith, and his geeky friend Jacob Rhame — to be among the last of the 51s pitchers to break through for the Mets. Yeah, I know Rhame has done squat for the big squad, but wait 'til 2019.
