Always gotta be relentlessly positive! Going with Cespedes!

The main picture and headline have winner written all over them. I don't like the subheadline, as it tries to do too much, and the weird font for the 3. The weird Harvey subpic is just terrible.

But for 2017, this cover is a fucking gem.

TRESPEDES certainly fits in with our previous two winners: Daily News covers featuring Yoenis Cespedes along with a play on his last name. (YES-PEDES in 2015 and CES BOOM BAH! in 2016) Will this combination prove to be magical a third time in a row? It's looking at least like TRESPEDES has a good shot at the Final Four.

TCD voters have gone against me plenty before so I know this will be an unpopular stance but I want this contest to highlight the stories that best illustrated what it was like to get back-page Mets news in 2017 and a shot of Cespedes doing something good was mostly not that. It was practically a freak occurrence.

The Harvey cover sucks for many reasons but it's not Fake News.

I want to vote for HARVEY WALLBANGERS for the same reasons. But it's emblematic of Newsday's general badness at composition. Over-saturated colors, bad contrast from non-outlined headline characters, coving the subject's mid-section with the headline text, all sucking some of the story from the photo.

The blood-covered lightbox just finishes it off. Lightboxes are for the web. Tabloid layouts look better in frames.

Newsday has the elements of a winner there, but in the end, they don't execute.

Those are good points, and HARVEY WALLBANGERS certainly is more appropriate for the 2017 season than TRESPEDES is. But even a bad year (as 2017 certainly was) will have at least a few good-news covers, and a bad-news cover is unlikely to ever win this competition. GOD OF BLUNDER is our other remaining bad-news cover, and it's also facing steep odds.

What an unfortunate matchup that was. That's like Louisville and Kentucky both making the NCAA tournament and meeting in the first round.

All about the Wallbangers. The text has that 'GAME OVER' screen feel to it (I can hear the words, You Don't Know Jack style, being plastered onto the loss) , and makes the focus Harvey looking dejectedly out to the outfield. Booze joke. Wallbanger, though not technically what was going on, is pretty descriptive of what was going on.

The Cespedes photo is just bad. It's from the back, focused on his butt. It's the afterswing with is the most boring part of the home run unless there's a flip. Trespedes is a stupid word. The Harvey head is oddly placed and is an unnecessary 'we need to put the bad news in here' addition. You get the neat 'larger than life' feel by having the bat/head outside the borders but then cover it up with too much text and a crappy picture.
