Who was Randy Moffitt? Randy Moffitt (1948–2025) was an American Major League Baseball relief pitcher, best known for his decade-long tenure with the San Francisco Giants. Born in Long Beach, California, and the younger brother of tennis legend Billie Jean King, he played for the Giants (1972–1981), Houston Astros (1982), and Toronto Blue Jays (1983). Drafted by the Giants in the first round in 1970, he became a reliable reliever, recording 96 saves and ranking among the National League’s top ten in saves and games pitched multiple times. Moffitt’s career was disrupted in 1979 by a rare intestinal infection caused by Cryptosporidium, which led to significant illness and time away from the game. Despite this setback, he returned to pitch for two more teams before retiring after the 1983 season. Over his career, he made 534 appearances, finishing 306 games. He was honored on the San Francisco Giants Wall of Fame for his contributions. Moffitt passed away in his hometown of Long Beach on August 28, 2025, at the age of 76, following a long illness. Rich Hinton died. https://tucson.com/sports/subscriber/article_48c7ac7f-471e-4e44-95ce-033ba9f9f86c.html Who was Rich Hinton? Rich Hinton (1947–2025) was an American left-handed pitcher who played parts of six Major League Baseball seasons between 1971 and 1979. A native of Tucson, Arizona, and a University of Arizona standout, he was drafted five times before signing with the Chicago White Sox in 1969. Hinton’s career was marked by frequent moves: he pitched for the White Sox in three separate stints, as well as for the New York Yankees, Texas Rangers, Cincinnati Reds, and Seattle Mariners. Though mostly a reliever, he started occasionally and threw the only two complete games of his career in 1978, his best major-league season. Over 152 career strikeouts, a 9–17 record, and a 4.87 ERA, Hinton was remembered as a journeyman pitcher who carved out a role on the fringes of the majors. His son, Robert Hinton, later played professionally in the minors from 2004 to 2013. Hinton died in August 2025 at the age of 78.

He latched on with the Diamondbacks, going 0-1 with a 5.79 ERA in 16 relief appearances for their Triple-A club in Reno, but was released in late July. He had 19 walks in 14 innings for Reno. Denyi Reyes, who pitched for the Mets in 2023, was 4-3 with a 4.14 ERA in 10 starts for the Samsung Lions in Korea, before they released him in mid-June. Pablo Reyes, who played for the Mets in 2024, hit .194 in 31 at-bats for the Yankees Triple-A club in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre before they let him go. He latched on with the Mets and though he hit .289/.385/.484 with 6 homers and 25 RBI for Syracuse, he was released in late August. David Robertson, who pitched for the Mets in 2023, is 1-0 with a 1.17 ERA in 9 relief appearances for the Phillies; he has 12 Ks in 7 2/3 innings. He was 0-1 with a 10.13 ERA in 6 relief appearances for their Triple-A club in Lehigh Valley. Amed Rosario, who played for the Mets from 2017 to 2020, is hitting .283/.318/.424 with 5 homers and 19 RBI in 56 games between the Nationals (.270 BA) and Yankees (.389 BA). -- Now let's go over how some more minor leaguers the Mets traded, but who never actually played for the Mets, are doing this year. Also noted are minor leaguers who were received in trades that are no longer in the Mets system. Ross Adolph played in the Mets system in 2018. He was traded to the Astros for J.D. Davis and Cody Bohanek in 2019. He is currently hitting .285/.395/.436 with 8 home runs, 29 RBI and 18 steals in 90 games for the independent Kansas City Monarchs. Kenedy Corona played in the Mets system in 2019. He was traded to the Astros for Jake Marisnick in 2019. He went hitless in 2 ABs for the Astros this year and has a .212 average with 6 home runs, 33 RBI and 15 steals in 107 games for their Triple-A club in Sugar Land. Ryder Ryan played in the Mets system from 2017 to 2019. He was traded to the Rangers for Ariel Jurado in 2020. Jose Quintana, who played for the Mets in 2023 and 2024, is 10-5 with a 3.69 ERA in 21 starts for the Brewers this year. He had a 6.75 ERA in 4 innings for their High-A club in Wisconsin. -- Now let's go over how some more minor leaguers the Mets traded, but who never actually played for the Mets, are doing this year. Also noted are minor leaguers who were received in trades that are no longer in the Mets system. Pete Crow-Armstrong played in the Mets system in 2021. He was traded for Javier Baez and Trevor Williams that year. The 23-year-old is currently hitting .252 with 28 homers, 83 RBI, 32 steals, 34 doubles and a league-leading 6.4 WAR for the Cubs this year. Isaiah Greene was taken by the Mets in the 2nd round of the 2020 amateur draft, but never played in their system. He was traded for Francisco Lindor and Carlos Carrasco in 2021. He is hitting .245/.369/.360 with 1 homer and 8 steals in 38 games for the Frederick Keys of the MLB Draft League. I thought that was interesting, as I was pretty sure the MLB Draft League was for college guys. It is--for the first half of the season. For the second half, they allow professional guys. Endy Rodríguez played in the Mets system from 2018 to 2019. He was involved in the three-team deal that got the Mets Joey Lucchesi in 2021. Francisco Alvarez: Alvarez (thumb) suffered a fractured left pinky finger when he was hit by a pitch during a rehab game at Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Alvarez had been working his way back from a right thumb issue that will require him to undergo surgery eventually. Although he's now dealing with injuries to both of his hands, the young backstop expressed optimism that he'll be able to return at some point this season. Until then, Luis Torrens will continue to work as the main catcher in Queens with Hayden Senger backing him up. Injury Finger. Est. Return 9/16/2025. Reed Garrett: The Mets placed Garrett on the 15-day injured list Monday due to right elbow inflammation. Garrett had been tagged for eight runs over 4.2 innings covering his last five appearances. He's been given a cortisone shot and hopes to be ready for activation Sept. 7 when first eligible, according to Andrew Tredinnick of The Bergen Record. Garrett's spot on the active roster and in the bullpen will be absorbed by Jose Castillo, who was called up from Triple-A Syracuse. Injury Elbow. Est. Return 9/7/2025. Tylor Megill: The Mets will have Megill (elbow) make at least one more rehab start before considering activating him from the 60-day injured list, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Heading into the week, Megill looked to be a candidate to start Friday's game against Miami, but the Mets opted to give him another rehab start to stretch out. The 30-year-old right-hander ended up taking the hill Thursday for Triple-A Syracuse in what was the fourth overall outing of his rehab assignment. He covered four innings and tossed 70 pitches for Syracuse, striking out four while allowing three earned runs on four hits and four walks. Megill will likely take the hill again in the minors early next week in what could be his final rehab start, but his role upon his return from the 60-day injured list has yet to be determined. Though Megill is building up as a starter, he could be relegated to the bullpen if top prospect Jonah Tong -- who will be called up from Syracuse to start Friday versus the Marlins -- fares well in his big-league debut and earns himself additional turns through the rotation. Injury Elbow. Est. Return 9/8/2025. Frankie Montas: Montas will undergo surgery to repair a torn UCL in his right elbow, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. Whether Montas requires Tommy John surgery might not be known until he has the operation, but a full UCL reconstruction is considered "very likely," per Heyman, which would knock Montas out until the 2027 season. The 32-year-old holds a $17 million player option for 2026 that he'll undoubtedly exercise. Injury Elbow. Est. Return 2/1/2027. Jose Siri: Siri (tibia) is expected to report to Single-A St. Lucie on Tuesday to begin a rehab assignment, Abbey Mastracco of the New York Daily News reports. Siri has been on the shelf since April 17 due to a fractured left tibia, but he's finally gearing up for a return. With the Mets having acquired Cedric Mullins at the trade deadline to serve as their primary center fielder and with the Tyrone Taylor still available to fill in for Mullins against left-handed pitching, the Mets likely won't be in much of a rush to bring the right-handed-hitting Siri back from the 60-day injured list. Injury Lower Leg. Est. Return 9/12/2025. Drew Smith: The Mets announced July 29 that Smith (elbow) has been throwing bullpen sessions and could be close to facing live hitters in batting practice, MLB.com reports. Updates on Smith's rehab from his July 2024 Tommy John surgery with an internal brace have been scarce over the past month, but assuming he's experienced no setbacks during the ramp-up process, he could have an outside shot at returning from the 60-day injured list in September. Before suffering the elbow injury last summer, Smith had been an integral piece in the New York bullpen, posting a 3.06 ERA while collecting two saves and six holds over his 19 appearances in 2024. Injury Elbow. Est. Return 9/8/2025. Jesse Winker: Winker (back) was cleared to begin a rehab assignment Wednesday with Single-A St. Lucie, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Though no reports indicated that Winker had resumed baseball activities, the 32-year-old evidently made enough progress behind the scenes over the last few days for the Mets to clear him for a rehab assignment. He'll start at designated hitter for St. Lucie on Wednesday and likely remain in the minors for several more games in order to stockpile at-bats and prove that his back won't be an issue if he's needed for spot duty in the corner outfield. Though Winker could be ready to return from the 60-day injured list at some point in September, the Mets may not be willing to open up regular playing time for him, especially while the team is getting good results from its current DH duo of Mark Vientos and Starling Marte. Winker slashed an unremarkable .229/.309/.400 in 81 plate appearances in the majors prior to being shut down with the back issue. Injury Back. Est. Return 9/5/2025.

Daryl Patterson died. https://www.newsweek.com/sports/mlb/former-world-series-champion-passes-away-2121047 Who was Daryl Patterson? Daryl Patterson was a Major League Baseball pitcher who played professionally from 1965 to 1975, including five MLB seasons with the Detroit Tigers, Oakland Athletics, St. Louis Cardinals, and Pittsburgh Pirates. Born in Coalinga, California, and of Mono Native American heritage, Patterson attended the College of the Sequoias, where he played baseball and basketball before signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1964. Drafted by the Detroit Tigers later that year, Patterson rose through the minors and debuted in 1968. That season he excelled as a reliever, posting a 2.12 ERA and contributing to Detroit’s World Series championship. Over four years with the Tigers, he went 9–7 with a 3.55 ERA, but tensions with manager Billy Martin led to his 1971 trade. Short stints with the Athletics and Cardinals followed, before he returned to the minors. Patterson resurfaced in the majors with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1974, where he was involved in a notorious brawl with Reds pitcher Pedro Borbón. He ended his MLB career with an 11–9 record, 4.09 ERA, and 142 strikeouts in 231 innings. Despite never recording a hit in 35 at-bats, Patterson was remembered as a reliable reliever. After retiring, he worked two decades with Pacific Gas & Electric and lived near Fresno, California, with his family. Marc Hill died. https://www.newsweek.com/sports/mlb/former-cardinals-catcher-longtime-baseball-coach-manager-passes-away-2118840 Who was Marc Hill? Marc Kevin “Booter” Hill (1952–2025) was an American Major League Baseball catcher who played from 1973 to 1986 for the St. Louis Cardinals, San Francisco Giants, Seattle Mariners, and Chicago White Sox. Born in Elsberry, Missouri, to athletic parents, Hill excelled in baseball and basketball in high school but chose baseball, debuting in the majors in 1973. Known for his strong arm, defensive skills, and sense of humor, he earned the nickname “Booter” from teammate Willie McCovey. Hill spent his prime years with the Giants, including a career-best season in 1977, and later served as Carlton Fisk’s backup with the White Sox. Over 737 MLB games, he batted .223 with 34 home runs and 198 RBIs, and recorded one stolen base. After retiring as a player, Hill managed and coached extensively in the minor leagues, winning the Carolina League championship with the Peninsula Pilots in 1992, and later served as a coach in the Astros and Yankees organizations. Hill passed away on August 24, 2025, at the age of 73, leaving behind a legacy as a respected player, coach, and mentor in professional baseball.

How many times have we seen prospects on other teams dupe a team into signing them into long term deals, just to have those deals fall flat on their faces? Jon Singleton, Evan White, Scott Kingery. MacLean's hot start reminds me of Christian Scott, who performed well in five of his first six starts. Where is he now?

Francisco Alvarez: Manager Carlos Mendoza said Alvarez (thumb), who was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday, will need to undergo surgery at some point, but the catcher will be re-evaluated in 10-to-14 days to determine if he can play through the injury for the rest of the season, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Alvarez was diagnosed with a right thumb sprain after suffering the injury on a head-first slide into second base Sunday, and it's possible the injury ends his 2025 campaign. However, he's going to attempt to put off surgery until the offseason and play through the sprained thumb. The Mets should have a better idea whether Alvarez will return this season once he's re-evaluated. Injury Thumb. Est. Return 9/8/2025. Carson Benge: Benge was placed on the 7-day injured list at Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday with an undisclosed injury. Benge had played only four games with Syracuse upon his promotion from Double-A Binghamton before going down with the injury. It's not clear what exactly he's dealing with or how long he'll be out, but the injury doesn't help Benge's already-long odds of making his major-league debut in 2025. The 22-year-old has slashed .306/.413/.504 with 12 homers and 20 steals across three minor-league levels this season. Injury Undisclosed. Est. Return 8/24/2025. Tylor Megill: Megill (elbow) struck out nine batters over 3.1 scoreless innings in a rehab start for Double-A Binghamton on Sunday. He allowed just one hit without walking a batter. The right-hander was simply too much for Eastern League hitters, firing 39 of 55 pitches for strikes in his second rehab appearance. Megill hasn't pitched for the Mets since June 14 due to an elbow sprain, so he'll need at least one more start in the minors before potentially being an option for the big-league rotation, and it wouldn't be a surprise if he gets two more while the team takes a look at top prospect Nolan McLean. Over five innings for Binghamton on his rehab stint, Megill hasn't given up a run while posting a 13:1 K:BB. Injury Elbow. Est. Return 8/27/2025. Frankie Montas: Montas' UCL injury in his right elbow is season-ending, and Tommy John surgery is being considered, Abbey Mastracco of the New York Daily News reports Saturday. Montas was placed on the injured list earlier Saturday with a UCL injury that manager Carlos Mendoza called "pretty significant." At this point, it's unclear how long he'll be sidelined, but the Mets have already ruled him out for the remainder of 2025. Montas is likely to undergo some sort of corrective procedure, and Tommy John surgery is a possibility. Injury Elbow. Est. Return 2/1/2026. Brandon Nimmo: Nimmo (neck) was out of the lineup for Saturday's game against Atlanta. Nimmo isn't part of the lineup for a third straight game, with Starling Marte patrolling left field in his place. Nimmo went through pregame warmups before a final assessment was made on his availability, Andrew Tredinnick of The Bergen Record reports. Injury Hand. Day-to-day. Peyton Prescott: Injury Elbow. Est. Return 2/1/2027. Jose Siri: Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Wednesday that Siri (tibia) will begin a rehab assignment next week, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Siri has missed most of the season with a fractured left tibia but is almost ready for game action. Given how much time he's missed, Siri is likely to need at least a handful of rehab contests before returning to the Mets' active roster. How Siri fits into the team's roster is unclear at this point, especially after Cedric Mullins was acquired at the trade deadline. Injury Lower Leg. Est. Return 9/1/2025. Luis Torrens: Torrens had been dealing with soreness in his catching hand but was available off the bench Saturday against Atlanta, Andrew Tredinnick of The Bergen Record reports. Torrens was surprisingly held out of the lineup Saturday for the third straight game, but it turns out his absence is due to soreness in his left hand. While he'll be available off the bench Saturday, Hayden Senger will draw another start behind the plate. Injury Hand. Day-to-day.

McNeil is one double away from tying Darryl Strawberry for 9th all-time in club history. Brandon Nimmo is 3 away from tying Strawberry. Probably worth calling up someone not named Senger this time. Can he hit still? Good excuse to get rid of Taylor. Put Alvarez at DH, release Taylor, call up a Triple A catcher.
