  1. will the Dunkin' Dounts cup be the last man standing?
  2. I also did not care for Field of Dreams. Too hokey for my tastes. Fman - you should vote with me based on Kelly McGillis' breasts.
  3. "Two brothers... One speaks no English, the other learned English from watching "The Wide World of Sports." So you tell me... Which is better, speaking no English at all, or speaking Howard Cosell?" That and Barney Rubble asking Lane if he minds if he asks Beth out sealed the deal on this one for me. Taylor Negron as the mailman, Lane's little brother with hookers in his room.
  4. How is this even close? Sean Penn, Forest Whitaker, Phoebe Cates, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Judge Reinhold, Eric Stoltz, Nick (Coppola) Cage. This film should be a lock for tthe Final Four. "Hey, there's no party for me in here." "No shirt, no shoes....no dice." "Hey! You know, we left this England place 'cause it was bogus, so if we don't get some cool rules ourselves - pronto - we'll just be bogus too!" And so many. many more.
  5. "Bustin' makes me feel good!"

I don't think its about the Dodgers at all. It's about National League baseball in NYC and a man who transcended the game. The monument is about more than a baseball player. It's about a man whose ideals and struggles and accomplishments as a person should be remembered. The guy just happened to play baseball. In New York City. For a National League team. That was the spiritual ancestor of the Mets. Wouldn't Brooklyn Dodger fans be somewhat appeased though by the fact that Jackie did not go west? He was not one of the 'traitors'
  9. From the '42' thread... HahnSolo wrote: Once I know my way around Citi, I'm sure I will be using the rotunda entrance less and less. I've been thinking a lot about this. We've all been going to Shea for years and we all have our favorite routes, entrances and exits (to the stadium, to the parking lot, to the subway). I wonder how long it will take me to feel as acclimated and comfortable in the new place. Subway not so much because what's really changed there? The round platform being gone was a shock and that's too bad but whatever. I usually drive, enter and park in a spot that makes it incredibly easy to exit and not get caught in traffic. Will that entry and exit, let alone parking spot, still be there next year? Willl there be a better one? Will I be able to find it? What willl be the best entrance to the stadium to get to my seats? Which restaurant might actually be good enough to make it worth my while to actually have dinner before the game? The Shake Shack has promise. I'm sure we all take some pride in the fact that we have been Mets fans for so long and know the place so well. Now all of a sudden we're on the same footing as the 'casuals'. It's irritating but kind of exciting in that we get to explore and get to know a new place. I think its going to be really odd for at least the entire first season.
  10. Thanks guys. Any idea why they are called pogs?
  11. But is it ironic?
  12. What is a 'scoreboard light 'pog'? On the auction at mets.com this is one of the things they are selling. The bidding is up to $450.00 but for the life of me I can't figure out what they are describing. Is it simply a light bulb from the scoreboard? SHEA STADIUM AUCTION: Scoreboard Light Pog "88 Item Description: This scoreboard light pog was located on the Mets' scoreboard at Shea Stadium during the 2008 season, the Mets' final season at Shea.
  13. Great, I'll keep you all posted.

  15. metsguyinmichigan wrote: Stand By Me was obviously very good, too. I didn't realize it was a Stephen King story. Might be the best adaptation of his work, though Dead Zone is really good, too. How about 'The Shawshank Redemption'? Also Stephen King, also from the same collection of novellas (Different Seasons) that 'Stand By Me' was from. Also in that collection was a story made into a bad movie - 'Apt Pupil'.

  18. Fman cracks me up.
  19. "I'm an excellent driver."
  20. Stand By Me. No contest.
  21. I liked 'Fletch', some funny lines but I gotta go with 'Splash' "Just me and the moron twins!" "We're not really brothers."

I understand Robinson's impact and importance and legacy and I completely respect it but I think that MLB retired '42' more for the legacy than for the man. Erecting an abstraction makes people think more. I think the Mets are doing the right thing - celebrating the ideals of the man rather than the player. If you put the statue there I think the message gets lost and people focus on the player. The statue should be the Dodgers deal.

    See it behind the escalators...?
  24. In that NYTimes article that Greg posted - this picture accompanies with the caption: A photograph of the former Mets second baseman Doug Flynn. The face is obscured but- it is a player wearing #23. However, the uniform is from '93-'94 (the ugly tail under 'Mets' remember?) so it couldn't be Flynn whose last year with the Mets was '81. A quick trip to MBTN told me who it must be. I now know, do you...?
