  1. Amos Otis and Ken Singleton.
  2. Is there a database that records, by any chance, the number of All-Star appearances by players whom the Mets have traded, released, sold, etc.? I was just looking at a photo of Felix Mantilla today and I wondered how often it happened that the Mets got rid of someone who later made an All-Star team. I think Mantilla must have been the first. Or very close. And of course I'd like to compare apples to apples here, so I'd need a matching list of players the Mets acquired who eventually became All-Stars. I'd also like a pony. ETA:We should probably establish some parameters, like "no one who became an All-Star after leaving the Mets is eligible if he hadn't played at least one game in a Mets uniform before leaving." This means that Paul Blair for example wouldn't count, since he was only a Mets farmhand when the Orioles picked him up.
  3. Big difference between him and Jason Bay is that Cohen's wallet erases all mistakes. Sign him, sign everyone, pay 'em all, eat contracts right and left if they suck eggs.
  4. Org-developed pitchers who hung around the bottom of the barrel before heading off to other clubs to become effective relievers and champions Do you suppose such guys develop significantly as pitchers, learn stuff (like new pitches), get lightbulb-going-off advice from new pitching coaches, etc. or just keep plugging away with the tools they have and their luck evens out? Another way of putting this is: do you suppose the Mets would have reaped the benefits of their later improvements, had they been more patient, or did they have to go through what they went through elsewhere in order to bring such results around?
  5. On High Heat, he dismissed it as "a throw-away line," and asked "Will I retire? We'll see," cementing his reputation as a know-nothing douchebag blabbbermouth of the very top echelon.
  6. So far all he's tweeted is "this hasn't gone as planned." No shit, Sherlock.
  7. We're all such cynics. Does no one in the world think that Russo is an honest man?
  8. Chris Russo vowed publicly to retire if the D'Bags won the NL (vowed when they were down 3-2). Will he?

  10. There was always something that struck me as a bit fascistic or at least authoritarian about the GGs coming from On High, as if there were no close decisions, or fielders who had ranked in the top four at their positions for a decade or more, or no one who had ever finished second to three different GG winners (and was, overall, therefore the best fielder over that three-year period, the lack of GGs notwithstanding). It has always struck me as deeply suspect that Maddux or Mazeroski or Mays, to stick only with the "M"s, won their GGs every year for a decade. All these stars had off-years with the bat (or the arm) when someone else outhit (or outpitched) them, and we could see that rarity because it showed up in the basic stats, but since there are no basic stats in fielding (at least none that made a shred of sense) we just let it go. Of course, Willie had a year or two when Ashburn or Pinson or Flood or someone outfielded him in CF but you'd never know it from the GG Awards. I dislike the GG awards intensely, but the top three nominees is the least of it.

  14. Bela Lugosi and Margaret Dumont, too. Possibly together.
  15. The Mick would be 91 today! Just kidding. It pains me that Keith Hernandez's birthday would fall on Mantle's birthday. Keith is 70 today. And actually I don't know how old Mantle would have been today--that's just a guess. But Keith is definitely 70. Which makes me feel old, very old.
  16. Is it just being a Mets fan that makes me think of Davey as an "Of Course!" pick and Lou as an "Of Course Not!"??? Help me, Rhonda. Give me a rational basis for this firm opinion of mine.

  18. =kcmets post_id=139548 time=1697558354 user_id=53] Alonso had the fourth highest 2023 WAR at 3.2 behind Lindor 6.0, Senga 4.5 and Nimmo at 4.0. He led the team in POLAR.
  19. I'd be curious how this ranking matches up against WAR.
  20. Jever work for a large company that hires senior administrative people at the top for absurd salaries, and keeps creating new top senior positions at top dollar while maintaining that they need to keep workers' salaries down because times are tough?
