  3. I wasn't connecting any dots or anything, nor do I think Simmons was implying anything. I just thought it was intersting. I remember watching the highlights from that game.
  4. It is kind of ironic that the mighty and powerful MLP Players' Union can be fought to a standstill by one shady agent.
  5. ]The luckiest division has been the NLW with 12.6 wins above projectionsSo their records actually reflect luck?! Imagine where'd they'd be otherwise.
  6. Edgy DC wrote:Is there really a September hot streak waiting to be hatched at Shea, the one GM Omar Minaya and Willie Randolph speak so optimistically about? Hasn't at least one member of the Mets brain trust been accused of this since 2001?It's lamented every year, except of course the years when they actually have one. Then the writers take credit for the idea.

Vic Sage wrote:i don't come here JUST to rip people's messages apart... it's merely an ancillary activity i engage in for the pure, unadulterated joy of it. mostly i come here (as i have for many years) to join my friends in amiably obnoxious banter, to enhance my understanding of this great game of ours and cultivate an online comraderie that has spilled over into our real lives. If you want to add some research, some information, some educated insight into the ongoing conversation we're engaged in, or just some amusing material (haikus are always welcome!), you'll be greeted with open arms. But if you just offer unsupportable opinions or unsupported assertions, you're posts are likely to be mocked. Anyway, i can't do you any actual harm, you know. You're there and i'm here. So stop whining, and either swim in the pool or don't.I agree with everything you said here, though maybe a newbie won't be as scared if you're a little gentler?Unless your point is to scare off those who post, as you say, "unsupportable opinions or unsupported assertions". I agree with that goal, though I think one post is a little early to be judging Mr. Met. Of course, after rereading your post, you really weren't judging Mr. Met, just his post. I guess I have no point.Kudos to Mr Met for showing up though, it must be tough to work up the energy to post when you have to dance and fling t-shirts around Shea 81 times a year.
  8. An interesting historical footnote from Simmons:]I had only one Red Sox friend (Hench) and one reader (Steve Comeau) realize the irony of Gerald "Ice" Williams' botching Pedro's no-hitter with the mistimed leap against the wall on Sunday: Remember when Pedro hit the leadoff batter during a Rays-Sox game in 2000, followed by the guy charging the mound, a raucous brawl, and then an enraged Pedro taking a no-hitter into the ninth? You know who the leadoff batter was? Gerald "Ice" Williams. Now that's goofy.
  9. I always thought KTE stood for Know Thy Elitist.
  10. ]clueless Art HoweHello, Mr. Kettle. You are black.
  11. ]The Mets have lost eight games in which they have taken a lead into the eighth inning. This sounds bad, but I'm guessing it's not too far removed from the league norm.

  13. If Glavine really did clear waivers, lets trade the guy for a middling prospect. Helps out next year's payroll.
  14. Is it 100% certain that when (if) he does make it to MLB that he will play for the Mets? Do they have his rights or whatever? Or after a couple of years do other teams have a shot at him again?

Centerfield wrote:I think though, that he is not and will never be the prototypical leadoff hitter. I agree with this.... As much as we point to his other attributes, that OBP is terrible for a #1. Centerfield wrote:If the Mets could find a high OBP leadoff guy and slide Reyes to #2, I think that might work.....but I don't agree with that. If uses his speed to score more often per trip on base, then it makes up for the lower OBP.
  18. I would hypothesize that there is no reason to try and read into Matsui's name being on this list, or Piazza's, or anyone else. My reasoning is that David Wright's name is on this list.

There is an interesting statistic which I saw once during a game. Reyes has (or had) the highest percentage of "runs scored" to "times on base." That must easily make up for his lower on base percentage. Plus, he's a pretty darn good shortstop. I think it's a little silly to discuss theoretical deals to trade Reyes, as I doubt management will ever do so. Nor do I want them too. Then again, I've discussed plenty of silly things on this board.
  20. I also highly recommend this one from Tuesday:[url]http://mets2005.myblogsite.com/blog/_archives/2005/8/16/1141154.html
  21. 2. David Wright doing a beautiful job turning an 0-2 hole into a walk -- he reminds me of Alfonzo the way he can work out of bad counts -- followed by Clifford hitting a no-doubter. I was going to post this in the IGT yesterday but forgot. I was thinking at the time that this could be even more helpful in that it would give Looper the day off, but that didn't work out.Speaking of which, why were there two guys warming up with no outs in the ninth and a 6-2 lead? I thought warming up used energy and caused arms to tire and stuff.
  22. Though I do disagree somewhat. Ice has performed about as well as can be hoped with the bat. I'm not sure who else would have performed better in Carlos' absence.Yeah he didn't catch that triple, but he didn't give up the home run that followed, or force the rest of the Mets to refuse to hit that day.
  23. BUMPHALF BUMPCouple of nice postings. I'm now regularly reading this blog.I found this passage very funny:But regarding Gerald Williams. I mean, what does it take? Remember the scene in "The Man With Two Brains" in which Steve Martin asks his wdow's spirit for guidance about whether he should marry Kathleen Turner? The house practically collapses in a hurricane of shattering objects and spectral screams, during which Steve stands there oblivious, saying, "A sign...anything..." C'mon, Omar -- does the scoreboard have to start gushing blood like some crazed recreation of "The Shining" before you take this man off the roster? [url]http://mets2005.myblogsite.com/blog
  24. Bell and Mitchell don't seem superflous, methinks.
