  1. of course it was. jacobs gave the mets a good chance to win when he played, cairo didn't. it isn't jacobs' fault that he didnt play more or that his platoon mates sucked ass. By this rationale, you should give Jacobs the same rating as someone who played exactly the same as he did but over the entire year. And that obviously wouldn't work. As far as I understand, the goal for the player rankings is not to rate how well someone played (or whether he gave them "a good chance to win"), but to rate his contribution over the entire year. So Matsui and Cairo get points for playing the whole year, but lose some for playing at an average or below average level. Jacobs gets points for playing at an above average level, but loses some for only playing for a short timespan.

  3. Mientkiewicz, Cairo, and Matsui, by virtue of themselves being below "replacement level" can not possibly me more valuable than anyone who made a positive contribution to the mets in 2005 (Jacobs being a prime example.) This is, IMHO, a terrible way to look at things. Was Cairo's year long contribution less valuable to the team than Jacobs' 1.5 months? Of course not.
  4. Thanks, Yancy. Great job. Congratulations, David.

  6. I was wondering if that was Gary, because it sounded a lot like him but not exactly. Maybe it's the result of the different station. But when he started talking about Dave Magadan (I didn't know he was the Cards' hitting coach) like he knew him I was pretty sure.
  7. Grrrr. I guess I could've made a category that read anyone except Yankees, Braves, Red Sox, and Astros, but I thought that seemed overly self-indulgent.
  8. Other was me. I explained what I meant in the first post.
  9. holychicken wrote: ="Edgy DC"]I can also think of many fine starters who featured two pitches. Who? I was always under the impression that 2 pitches just wasn't enough and when talk about Heilman being a starter came up, I thought something similar to what SI said. I just can't imagine that you can fool major league hitters their second time against you, let alone their third and possibly fourth times, when you are only throwing two pitches. Well, Doc Gooden featured only two pitches in his 1985 campaign. In fact, I've heard that adding a third pitch screwed him up. (Thanks, Mel, you're a genius!) But most guys don't have his talent. Tom Glavine featured one pitch in the pre-Questec era. _____________________________ This post had the designation 141) Kevin Appier
  10. I'll say it again: I would've been pissed in Ventura's position. Though it did give me my favorite Costas quote of all time: After Todd Pratt's walk pushed across the tying run, Ventura singled over the right-field fence...
  11. Jacobs 2 Diaz 2 Floyd 2 Takatsu 1.75 Beltran 0.75 Reyes 0.5 Offerman 0.5 DeFelice 0.25 A. Hernandez 0.25
  12. Toast can fly. Just ask Willets.
  13. It's good that most people have a rooting interest. I was expecting a lot of Don't Care's. Though I guess anyone but the Yanks and/or Braves is kind of the same thing.
  14. Juan Samuel is not my friend. I like him less than any other Met in history. And it's not even his fault. He didn't do anything. I'm just crazy.
  15. Yancy Street Gang wrote: They report that they've heard reports that free-agent-to-be Rafael Furcal has been saying that he'd like to play second base for the Mets. The playoffs start today, and the rumors are already making my head spin. And this one includes a guy who has a game to play today. This rumor, if it was put out there by someone who is connected to Furball, is probably specially constructed to drive up prices.
  16. IIRC, Aaron Heilman will be pitching in this league as a starter to get used to being a starter again. I know for a fact, from the FAN, that he will doing this somewhere, though I could be wrong on what league it is.
  17. I don't particularly think McCarver is pro-Yankee, he just says stupid things. Of course, he's way better than the average color guy, as anyone who regularly listens to Brave, Yankee, or (from what I've heard) Red Sock broadcasts could tell you.
  18. If Ramon Hernandez or Molina is hitting in the sixth slot next yeara, then we've got problems.
  19. In case this is a veiled question in my direction, I didn't boo. And I wouldn't have even if I knew at the time that Willie made the decision himself.
  20. Valadius wrote: It would be a massive project, to be sure, but it would at least offer a far more comprehensive ranking system and would allow our Schaefer totals from this year to fully integrate with the rest of Mets history. We could do them quite quickly if we set our minds to it. No way. All the intangibles and defensive statisics are lost doing it that way, because you're not going to know those things from looking at a box score. IMO, the way these guys have done each year is as close to fully comprehensive as you're going to get. If you're really into it, I would suggest you go ahead and give Schaefer points for each game in one year, and see how your totals match up to the CPF rankings for that year. I'm guessing they'll be pretty close. I figure you'll get through about two months of games before becoming exhausted and calling it quits. Besides, the Schaefer system has some flaws as currently implemented, and my final rankings for 2005 will not be a mirror of the Schaefer results.
  21. Yancy Street Gang wrote: Maybe next year the Mets will play a bunch of October games, and we can have an October winner, too. So someone busts it up for two games and gets declared a Schaefer PotM? Doesn't seem fair to the guy who has a great 28 games in April or whatever. If postseason series happen, it could be broken up by series. So after we paste the Dodgers next year and David Wright hits .412 with 4 homers and 15 RBI, he could be Schaefer 2006 NLDS Player of the Series or Schafer Player of the 2006 NLDS.
  22. Should the September totals also include October? They could be called September and October totals.
  23. Edgy DC wrote: Argue if you must for Marlon, but there were way too many veteran reserve infielders on the 2005 Mets. Next year, I'll not have it. I'll take Marlon and leave Miggy and Jose (Offerman).
  24. I think Marlon is a great guy to bring back. Wonderful bench guy.
  25. I didn't realize that. With my conspiracy theory-fueled imagination, I figured McCarver told them to get Leiter our of there. _____________________________ This post had the designation 142) Jae Weong Seo
