If the Mets are going to hang in the Wild Card race, they will want Santana starting. And if they don't, then he might as well start. Meaningless starts are better for him, I would think, than meaningless relief appearances. I'm not so sure about that. I think what he needs is merely to do it. I'm not sure he needs "starts" or "50 IP" or anything. Just apperances in which he warms up, throws the ball at the plate, and feels fine the next day. Can't rely on him for anything, so I'm not qutie sure if the Mets are in a playoff race of some kind that you can/should shove him into the rotation and demand he pitch like an Ace. Should the Mets be allowing him to throw 100 pitches? 110? He's at 88 throw 6. Pull him? what if he's at 107 with 1 out and a runner on first and second with a 4-2 lead in the 7th? Push him? Pull him? In the bullpen you get a better chance at controlling when and how long he's going to pitch. "You've got the first inning after the starter today" and put him out there. Or have him close out the game. If the Mets are in it, I'm not sure a 5IP "rehab-like" start from Santana forcing extra bullpen innings is a good idea either.

The interface is far superior to Yahoo! I've never liked most of the other formats, but I agree on cutting an OF spot. not enough players out there. There are like 7 guys that aren't on teams and they get 2-3 AB a week.

It looks to me like the timetable for Santana returning would be so late in August that caution until 2012 might be the best option. I think the information that can be gained by Santana pitching for a month about his arm strength and ability is extremely valuable about the 2012 construction of the team. I've got a post written and scheduled for tomorrow morning where I suggest he pitch out of the bullpen actually.

Options abound, but this isn't what the thread is about. tangentially, if we're talking about trading relievers and replacing them with guys from the minors. Or even trading Capuano (seen Pelfrey tossed about too, but hard to tell if that's just because he's taken the Ollie/Castillo role on this team). And presumably trading a guy opens up a 40 man spot if you're trading for prospects, so you could add Schwinden then, who'd be the third Chris to make a start for the Mets this year.
  6. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I don't know about "serious trouble." A spot start is when you need somebody for one day, maybe when there are back-to-back doubleheaders after a few rainouts or something like that. It's when you reach down to AAA to get whichever starter is rested and available. If he's needed to join the rotation, then yeah, it's a bad sign. But for one start? Not so much? (This raises the question, though. Who is the sixth starter on the Mets depth chart right now? Carrasco? If they had to summon someone from Buffalo, who would it be? Misch?) Schwinden's been floated, but he's not on the 40man.

  8. Edgy DC wrote: a current problem is that almost all of the teams in front of the Mets in the Wild Card standings are winning as well right now. A key exception is Milwaukee, who just got passed by Pittsburgh(!). Arizona is sliding a little too. They're playing some good ball, but they've got to get it done in division play. Well, they have a key series against the Phillies after the break. Would have to sweep to have any real ground made up, but.. they did beat the Braves recently. and not unti August again, when they have 6 games (or the number of losses they're behind right now) by then Wright and Reyes should be making this lineup look pretty awesome, and who knows, maybe even Ike and Johan for the second series.

I'm not sure what's more delicious, the raving lunatic fans that rant about Jeter batting leadoff/etc, or the counter argument and the grasping at straws to justify it all. heard a bit of Mike and Mike this morning. "I know people accuse ESPN of being very pro-Yankees, but i'm not a Yankees fan, so.." and then ranted about the negative treatment he's getting from some and part of his justification was he's 16th in BA of all qualifying SS. i.e. he's not a disaster yet so why are we whining? LEAVE DEREK ALONE! *crys*

I'd knock that fuckin' thing down my fist. Please, just do her up against the door.

Quality on mlb.com is great but the empty spaces between half innings are quite boring (though, I'm sure they'd be more appreciated if I was watching any other team's broadcast). Dodgers not quite as sharp tonight as the Mets. Do that on the audio too. You just get the crowd noise. Surprised MLB doesn't have an advertising deal specifically for that space.

And (while we're on TV analogies) I think in order to hit Lilly we need a bat the size of the one Eddie carried. I don't have the numbers, but they tend to hit guys better as they get through a third time through the order so...let's get this party started or something.
