And he hits left-handed. It would be a good movie, anyway. So would the story of the fat Mets blogger that went to Fantasy Camp and became the backup SS.. I hit lefty too. oh, I missed it already? shoot.
  3. Edgy DC wrote: The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, But in ourselves.... I don't dispute that the organization had come to a reckoning, or that they have a good clue what lies ahead. (Who knows? But they probably have a better notion than than Minaya's team did seven years ago when they signed him. I hope so.) My main problem is that, in the end, he was essentially traded for Ronny Cedeo. And I don't care that he didn't work out. A $1.4 million bonus (in 2005 dollars) to a hot Dominican teenager that you believe in is still a better bet than a 2012 $1.2 million (plus incentives) deal for Ronny C. to be your backup shortstop. Ronny Cedeno, or D.J. Carrasco, or even Armando Rodriguez. Ultimately it's probably not a big deal, but I don't agree with it. This is obviously hyperbole, but I think Martinez would've provided more value to the Mets if they'd made him the backup SS instead of Cedeno. Even as a SS virgin. And he hits left-handed.
  4. Benjamin Grimm wrote: He can opt for free agency. I believe that was a false statement. Surfing the Mets: Source: If Herrera clears waivers, cannot declare free agency. Complex rules, but in baseballese this would be his first official outright. Chris Walendin @tpgMets @mikeaxisa Believe he has 1 left. Looks like options were used in '08 & '09, but not in '10 or '11.
  5. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Hererra cleared waivers and is expected to sign a minor league deelio with the Mets. I don't believe he has a choice.
  6. big 8th inning pinch-hit home run against the Astros as part of a 4 run inning to bring the Mets back from a 4-1 hole and win the game.
  7. so let's take him out back and shoot him, that'll help the Mets win.
  8. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Geez. If he coulda traded him I'm sure he woulda. That was kinda my point on the I hope he clears front.
  9. Edgy DC wrote: I'd say it's probable. How educated that hope is and how much stock Sanderson is placing in it are further matters, but there have been whispers for several months that the Mets were looking to move on from the Martinez adventure. We'll find out soon. But him playing 'everyday' in the minors without eating roster space is probably the best option.
  10. Benjamin Grimm wrote: He's still Mets property if he's not claimed. They'd be able to put him in the minors and off the 40-man roster. I don't know if another team that claims him would have to put him on their 40. If so, then that might be a deterrent. yes, they do. It's possible Sandy asked around a bit about trading him to judge interest and has an educated hope that he'll clear.
  11. do we really think it's 'good for the Wilpons'? I can't see a new commissioner coming in and trying to boot an owner like that. I imagine the other 29 wouldn't look too kindly on that. edit: especially given that they're apparently no longer in debt to MLB and are able to pay their players. I think it might be more so that this last agreement introduced so many new changes that are still in flux, and it makes sense to have him see it through.
  12. Nymr83 wrote: You think Piazza won't get in on the first ballot because of steroid suspicions or because of rumors that he was "sam champion's buddy"? Does he make it the 2nd year once the "none of these guys are first ballot" dopes come along? I'm ready to book the hotel room in Cooperstown, I mean why not? I haven't been there in roughly 15 years and when is another Met potentially going in again? yeah, definitely tempting. (next time? Perhaps ~2019 when Beltran's eligible?)
  13. lol, caught this comment to that article: I am a 30+ year Yankees fan.Jorgie is without a doubt a class act, however, I am NOT a fan of his baseball play. Here's why. While catching: 1. He usually (90%) lightly tosses the ball back to the pitcher. Clemens hated that as did others.
  14. smg58 wrote: Martinez is out of options, so unless he made the team as the fifth outfielder, this was going to happen. Of course, going out and getting a fifth outfielder will necessitate somebody else being waived, too. I'd have given him the chance, personally. I don't understand why Carrasco is still on the 40. He'd clear waivers, unless somebody does us a favor. If he opted for free agency, we'd still save some money if he spends any time on somebody else's major league roster. Herrera may not be anything special, but he's more valuable than Carrasco. I'd hate to think we'd just let these guys get claimed when there may be room for the both of them. Fernando still has options.
  15. not quite a Woah yet. If it's indeed true, it might mean nothing more than removal from 40 man. And there's also the option of being pulled back.
  16. Edgy DC wrote: Bill Price somehow thinks Barry Larkin vetoing his trade to the Mets diminishes him and therefore hopes he doesn't get into the Hall of Fame. which is clearly why A-Rod won't get in right?
  17. Edgy DC wrote: I'd have realized that was actually Piazza about two weeks after passing him on the street. This is why I got married. We must've spotted 2 dozen baseball players in Spring Training last year and pretty much all of them were spotted by my wife whispering to me "hey, isn't that a player?", or in one case asking one where he got that nifty Mr Met Leprauchaun hat.
  18. Lefty Specialist wrote: I've always felt that people deserve their privacy. And I'm a lousy stalker anyway. I like it when someone famous can walk around like a normal person, which is something you can do better in New York than just about anywhere else. (I imagine Mike likes it, too.) they still have their privacy if they don't know you're stalking them! SNY should televise a new show for non-gametime. sneak a tracking device on Piazza or some ex-met and provide Jack Bauer like updates. "Piazza's checking out at Two Boots now! He's bought a chicken pizza and it's HOT! He's on the move!"
  19. It's definitely not a hitter, because a hitter wouldn't cite impending last place or being unable to hit Strasburg. No way is it a player. It's written in a way that suggests the guys been here at least a little bit, and expects to be here and doesn't mention wanting to be elsewhere or anything like that. A non-player would probably have more interaction with Fred as well. I mean, how much do you think Daniel Murphy interacts with him? Bullpen coach or something? seems to take the Mookie thing personally.
  20. Lefty Specialist wrote: Actually saw Mike on the street last month, walking down Broadway not far from my office. He was alone, no posse. I'd already passed him when it registered ('Holy Sh*t, that's Mike Piazza!'). Thought about turning around and saying something but I figured his days are full of middle-aged fanboys like me gushing over him like giddy schoolgirls. So I walked on. i would've turned around and stalked him, at least reported back on where he ate lunch or something. ;-)
  21. Edgy DC wrote: Yeah, I don't know why youse guys think this effects Justin Turner at all at all. The job he looks to get was symbolically being held by Jordany Valdespin, and will be held by Valdespin in fact if the relative performances make an argument for it. because he's getting 1.1 million, although I haven't heard if he's guaranteed a major league deal or not, but given that he's started the last two years.. while it's easy to pigeon hole him into backup SS and Valdespin's supposed job, he also backups up 2B which really makes Turner redundant in terms of coverage.
  22. at the All-Star game next year, instead of Seaver throwing a pitch to Piazza, they're going to get together and stomp grapes between the mound and the plate.
  23. Nymr83 wrote: I don't think Cedeno hurts the team, unless he ends up blocking someone from getting promoted who would help, but he won't help things around here either. well he sucks. Turner may be the most logical guy without a chair now.
  24. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I don't know about that. I suspect he's good enough to be a backup shortstop on a last-place team. self-fulfullling prophesy, that.
  25. Are there actually any sorta maybe not completely worthless backup SS out there? Honestly, isn't it probably more beneficial to just make Turner practice it a little bit more?
