"We took a ligament from Mike's hip and tranplanted it to his elbow and, frankly, it was an absolute disaster." We went in to replace his ligament and determined he doesn't have one. We looked up and realized we'd gotten Dickey instead of Pelfrey.
  3. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I was wondering that too. Pelfrey is eligible for arbitration again for 2013, right? And he can't get less than 80 per cent of this year's contract, so he'll surely be non-tendered. Once that happens, he'll be available cheap and I suppose the Mets might be one of the teams willing to consider signing him. (I don't know if they will or not, and my guess is that they won't, but Pelfrey isn't necessarily finished as a Met.) It's a moot point because I don't see any way they actually offer him arbitration. The Mets can say "Hey, we're not tendering you to not be available until May-June, but if you take this 1 million dollar contract, we'll gladly let you mill about and provide depth. I mean, that's what he'd get from another team anyway right? Does the status quo make the Mets more favorable? I guess we'll see come November and accessing the team's SP depth. Maybe a team will indeed tell him we're gonna sign Bartolo Colon to hold down the fort, but expect you to take his spot in June? But I don't see any real reason the Mets would outright not look to retain him, pitching depth being what it is. Unless someone's actually willing to seriously offer him a contract of substance?
  4. Benjamin Grimm wrote: No, there's no Black Widow movie, at least not yet anyway. I think that Ant Man and the Wasp were included in early treatments for the Avengers movie, but for whatever reason they didn't make the final cut. There was also talk a few years ago of an Ant Man movie, but that doesn't seem to have gone anywhere. It's interesting to see some of the posts that Vic made earlier in this thread, and several years ago, about comics movies on the horizon. So many of them didn't come to pass. What version of Anna Karenina did you see? The Garbo version, or a more recent one? And i looked at a list somewhere and it's mostly sequels coming up for Marvel movies (or reboots) don't see a lot of new ones, which is a shame. A more recent one (it was a prerelease screening) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1781769/ I mean, Keira Knightly and Alicia Vikander were nice to look at, but the plot was jumpy and unclear and often simply left unsaid. Perhaps the expectation is that I know the story? I didn't.

  8. metsmarathon wrote: yankee fans were raging assholes before the housing house of cards tumbled to the ground. mets fans were raging lunatics before the madoff hit the fan. yeah...but that may have bumped up the percentages.
  9. I vote for "economy sucks, people struggling at home or walking crappy jobs. pent up aggression likely to come out with other strong emotional (Fan) reactions. " Probably a contributing factor to "Ya Gotta Believe" becoming "Ya Gotta Sell!" too.
  10. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Does Nick Fury show up after the credits in Anna Karenina? I sure hope so. Hey..it's free and what not.. I made the mistake of asking my wife if she wanted to go before I looked up what it was. oops. They also don't let you bring your phone in, which means no words with friends to kill the time until they roll the movie. Vic Sage wrote: HULK is totally missable. CAPTAIN AMERICA is not only an excellent movie in its own right, it's prerequisite viewing for the AVENGERS. shoot. Then I guess I better grab that one to watch. Keeps slipping through my 'things to do' list.

  12. batmagadanleadoff wrote: Edgy DC wrote: Well, there's the sample size thing. It's early. Yeah. And that's why I wasn't predicting the rest of the season. calling them lucky, and a last place team, is predicting.
  13. TransMonk wrote: Who is going to lead the team in steals this season and how many will they swipe? OE: And I'm not looking at individuals and their Ks. I'm talking about Tejada striking out when the situation calls for a groundball to the right side or Thole striking out when a long fly ball will score a run. IMO, this team will finish in the top 5 of the NL in Ks. yes, but all that's minor stuff (and fluky) they're going to score a ton of runs.
  14. Gwreck wrote: The Van Wyck is actually an interstate highway (I-678). well, he better get his .569 SLG up then!
  15. TransMonk wrote: This is a team that leads the league in Ks and has little-to-no speed...and these are things that are not going to improve much as the sample size gets bigger. Ike Davis is not going to strike out nearly 200 times. Lucas Duda is not going to strike out the 150+ times he's on pace for. Torres WILL add more speed than Hairston and Baxter. And the team's not necessarily slow. Duda's slow and Davis and Thole are below average, but that's it. everyone else is serviceable. Murphy's not fast but he's not an anchor, and he certainly has plenty of defensive range and probably shouldn't be stealing anyway. I imagine if i went to look up the stats you'd find he goes first to third as much as anyone.
  16. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: "Good" offense, yes. "One of the best... in the league?" One of the 9 or 10 best, certainly. Otherwise... not really. That the Mets are looking better than predicted is great... but it doesn't change the fact that most didn't expect the bats to be more than league-average-y. I understand we lost Reyes and Beltran, but Duda and Davis and more of a better Wright and also less AB from Justin Turner. (and Willie Harris) Should that not be better than last year? Obviously health plays in, but health always plays in. They were 6th last year in runs scored, best in the division. second in OBP with all reasonable projections putting them at more power leading to more runs out of that OBP (which is what hasn't happened yet) They scored 718 runs. here's a poll that suggests many people think they'll score more than 700. http://www.tedquarters.net/2012/03/01/mets-over-under-14/
  17. Closest Interstate to Citi Field is 495, and David Wright just fell off it, down to .494 OBP.
  18. we're also leaving out in our 'the Mets have to regress' arguments, that the Mets are HORRIBLE with the bases loaded. That will regress too. It's not so much that the Mets haven't been getting on base at a good clip, it's that they've been failing to drive them in. Luck has created a lot of baserunners but less RBIs. More solo home runs than 3-run home runs. Fman99 wrote: Ceetar wrote: The Mets reasonably projected to have one of the best offense in the league Really? That's some wild eyed optimism and/or meth rock smoking. I was and still am hopeful that guys like Tejada and Duda can take the next step, that Murphy can continue to hit for average and that Jason Bay could manage to not kill any one who was hitting successfully. But I don't think many people reasonably projected the Mets hitters as a group to be much better than average, aside from you. I'm just saying. I'm by far not the only one, and the math works too. They should be better than last year, in which they were in the top bunch, and part of that projection was David Wright being much better, which appears to be true.
  19. Edgy DC wrote: You're a 12-year veteran with a $30 million salary and a one-way ticket to the Hall of Fame. The hitting coach shouldn't even be bothering you. And if you're slumping and actually want to talk to him and his advice isn't working, any hitting coach in the country would be happy to do some private consulting free of charge. It's your slump, Albert. Own it. hitting coaches take the blame from players too I guess, not just fans. I guess it depends on how much value you think a hitting coach actually has. (Personally, I kinda like Dave Hudgens) This is clearly the "New York" factor right? new player comes to New York, takes a while to adjust? What do you mean he's playing in Anaheim? huh? Clearly Donald Duck's disapproving glare is the cause.
  20. A team's record in games decided by larger margins is a more reliable measure of its true talent. There a write up on this somewhere? We're still in the small sample size space. Duda and Davis aren't really hitting for instance. The offense clearly isn't playing to potential. The Mets reasonably projected to have one of the best offense in the league, and they've scored more than 3 runs in an inning what..twice? this year. That will change. I think the one-run wins is a reflection of the Mets possessing quality players that both keep the offense from bottoming out completely, and manage to hold down leads via good pitching. There record probably is better than it should've been in 1-run games, and they probably have some luck, and some Heath Bell to thank for things like that, but while we can't always expect the Mets to win every 1-run game, we can't reasonably expect the Mets to play as many 1-run games either.
  21. batmagadanleadoff wrote: The Mets phenomenal record in one and two run games this season coupled with Bill James' Pythagorean theorem, suggests that the Mets are a very lucky last place team. I don't think it suggests that at all. I don't think it's predictive.
  22. those aren't the same ones?
  23. I haven't seen the Incredible Hulk or Captain America yet. I tentatively intend to do that this week, but going out to see a screening of Anna Karenina tonight so it'll have to wait. Although I don't imagine that it's a prerequisite to see them before the Avengers.
  24. Mets close out April 13-10. Pretty respectable, but let's not making losing streaks a thing in May. win it tonight. Probables are Jon "New Nose" Niese and J. A. "B. C." Happ.
  25. Fman99 wrote: I went to the old park for a MFY/Red Sox tilt, sometime in the early 2000's. The fans were all animals, from both teams. I won't go back. Sunday? I find in general weekend night crowds are the worse, even at Shea. I blame ESPN.
