  2. Mets Willets Point wrote: I just think that since the Wild Card was introduced, more often than not the Wild Card team has been one of the better teams (by my accounting 24 of the 34 Wild Card winners from 1995 to 2011 had regular season records equal or better to one or more division champions in their league in the same season). People act as if "winning the division" is a great accomplishment but I think every year there are there's at least one division champion per league who is the weakest team in the playoffs. The whole idea that the Wild Card has to be "punished" for not winning the division when they are often better than division champions in the same league is what I find absurd. Yes but..the system always protects the best team. sure, a Wild Card may be better than another division team (Record wise anyway, random fluctuation and unbalanced schedules leave me unconvinced most times) but they're never ever the best team. A point of contention here I guess is if the Orioles and Yankees had tied for best record and had to play today. Would've sucked for the Yankees when they lost and were relegated to Wild Card after having the best record through 162, but again that's protecting the absolute best record team, the Orioles.
  3. There is simply no perfect system. There are examples for every situation which would be a 'travesty' depending on how you look at it.
  4. http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/index.php/new-and-improved-ottoneu-arbitration-process/ sent an email. two options, either you vote one player off every other team, or you add $25 scattered among the salaries of the other 11 teams.
  5. smg58 wrote: Congratulations to the Mohawk Red Flyers! (Whose team is that anyway?) So the site says arbitration begins Oct. 16. What does that mean? arbritration is the new process of voting someone off your opponents team or something? I don't know, this change when in while I was chugging liters of beer in Mnchen so i'll need to read up on it. Mohawk is mgmlax85 who was one of the non-CPF guys but I don't remember where we acquired him from.
  6. metirish wrote: A friend posed a question on FB...how come the MFYs with the best record in the AL open up on the road agaist the wild card play in game winners? Same for the Nationals , one person responded that because of the new WC games a travel day was taken away from the division series because of the TV sked so in order for the team with the better record to get three games at home they open up with two on the road......not that I care about the MFYs but that if true is just bad. The justification was that the second wild card was decided well after scheduling, so to fit it in best this is a one year thing. I'm not sure I buy it though. Even given that they couldn't have pushed back the playoffs 1 day with 6 months notice it seems silly. Just ditch the off day before the 5th game if it comes to it. Yeah, it sucks if it's like Oakland-NY, but at least both teams are doing the traveling. equal footing and all. In this situation, if the home wild card team wins, they get to sit and wait for the Yankees to arrive. And if they don't win, both teams have to travel anyway. but screw 'em all.
  7. Edgy DC wrote: Well, yes and no. (See what I did there?) At least part of that is tracing the simple escalations he would get during those arbitration years. Of course. But those are non-existent now. He very well could've offered 6-6-6-6. 2013 being the money tight year and he didn't really give Niese more than he would've gotten. Still says nothing of course. It's just an example of an exception Sandy has already made use of. I think it's entirely possible that Alderson could aim to negotiate a smaller number for 2013 with a spike in 2014 and a drop again in 2015 and behind. That's not quite backloading though.

  9. projected lineup? Does Santana get the start, or Dickey?
  10. Do you not want to backload deals for free agents this winter? Its a possible strategy, given the nut we have for 2013. (Ed: Poor Jordany!) But generally speaking, I dont like to pay for today with deferrals tomorrow. Of course, he did just backload Jon Niese's contract (3-5-7-9-10*-11*)

Edgy DC wrote: Ceetar wrote: Actually Tejada has had a 'eh' season and showed very little growth that has me a little concerned. plays the premium position and is probably above average defensively so that doesn't kill you or anything, but it's not a strength either. Tejada has a 1.8 WAR which is about equal to Reyes on a per-PA basis. Being above average defensively at shortstop --- or anywhere, really --- is indeed a strength. Function of defense metrics apparently. I obviously haven't watched both concurrently, but Reyes always seemed better defensively to me. But it's not about Jose. Jose is much better. It's about Tejada putting up the same WAR in more PA than last year. Walking less. striking out more. B-R lists him at 88 OPS+.
  13. G-Fafif wrote: Zvon wrote: TransMonk wrote: I'm guessing that Jose doens't lay down a bunt single and then take the rest of the game off. Tejadas fine season and individual at bats which are a joy to watch has me sayin " Jose who?" It doesn't by any means tell the entire tale, but as we speak, Reyes and Tejada have identical batting averages of .287. Wish they still played together. indeed. better together would be preferable. Actually Tejada has had a 'eh' season and showed very little growth that has me a little concerned. plays the premium position and is probably above average defensively so that doesn't kill you or anything, but it's not a strength either.
  14. Edgy DC wrote: Sure seems like he is saying things of substance , especially in regards to our "core" two this I don't like though Could Baltimore or Oakland winning help show the lack of a need for a huge payroll? Yeah, to some extent. But look: The expectations in Baltimore this year, or the expectations in Oakland this year, or any year in some of these cities are very different than they are in New York. And I think we just have to recognize that. What expectations in NY?, I mean really. I wasn't sure what to conclude from that. A lot of deliberate ambiguities, of course, but sometimes he snuck what looked like a concrete statement in there, but it when I tried to pick up on it, I couldn't get a handle. Very sneaky, Alderson. I think he's saying that repeatedly making low-risk high-reward type signings or other such tactics of smaller market teams might work out sometimes, but an attitude of "sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, that's baseball" doesn't fly in NY.
  15. Edgy DC wrote: So its very possible that well be more active in the trade market, as well as potentially in the free-agent market. We will certainly be looking for tall players, as well as short ones and moderately sized ones. moneyball!
  16. yawn. It's a freaking GM. GMs rarely say anything specific. Buzzwords, hope and optimism, etc. Of course, millions are going to watch and overanalyze the debate tonight too.
  17. Benjamin Grimm wrote: That's one of the many reasons why I'm skeptical about the "Jason Bay won't have to compete for a job in the spring" stories we've been seeing. Terry seems to have given up on Bay, and deservedly so. I have to think that that portends how it will be next year, if Bay somehow makes the team. (Which I also highly doubt.) Bay won't have to compete for a job in the spring. Someone will pick him up for the minimum after the Mets release him and he'll probably earn a bench spot based on veteranness.

  22. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: RealityChuck wrote: I can't see the slightest sense in trading Davis. There is a weird mindset that once you develop a major league talent, the smart thing is to trade him away for prospects (who might never make it) on the odd chance that one of them might be better. This is Steve Philips-type thinking -- any trade is better than nothing. But it can't possibly improve the team if you keep trading away your best players and have to wait a few years before the trade sees results, if at all. And then, once you do develop one of those players, you trade him away for more prospects and the circle of baseball mediocrity goes on. I don't think Davis would go for a young player who might be better; he'd go for a comparable player who plays a different position, and that's if he goes at all. straight up for Justin Upton?
  23. starting on 2014, no FOX exclusive window (as it pertains to MLB.TV and Extra Innings anyway)
  24. One more thing: Dickey received almost a full run per game more than Kershaw in offensive run support this season. I wasn't differentiating because would/should. I think an argument for Kershaw or Dickey has plenty of merit. (and others as well) The difference is so minute. Kershaw has the ERA and WHIP, but not by much. If the Dodgers defense is only fractionally better (And depending how comfortable you are with the measurement of course) that probably erases the difference. I think the IP matters too. Dickey's thrown more complete games and more innings. More shutouts too. Arguably he's had more dominating games, if that matters or not in terms of the award, I dunno. It's ultimately going to come down to how the individual voters feel about the value of each point. If Dickey absolutely dominates tonight I think that almost clinches it for him though.
  25. Gwreck wrote: Ceetar wrote: It's also not true. Sure. Jason Bay and Andres Torres are bound to have break-out seasons again. Would be one of the least surprising things. This happens ALL THE TIME. and regardless, even if they're not starters, doesn't mean they can't be helpful.
