  2. I watched that one from a Cornell dorm room on a tiny 14in television in a building that I believe has since been knocked down.

I see a lot of drama this off-season, especially if the Yanks lose today, and it certainly could culminate with A-Rod going to Cleveland or Atlanta or somesuch with the Yanks eating a money sandwich. Maybe Denver. Yipes. I want him to go to Seattle so that he can go into the Hall as a Mariner. But I suspect he finishes out the contract, mostly as a part time DH type guy.

But I feel like it was probably more the injury. Didn't Schoeneweis have a disconnected tendon or something in his knee or something too? Paid way too much for those damaged goods guys.

I used to think the Heath Bell/Royce Ring deal was the worst of Omar's moves but the Putz deal was probably worse. Jason Vargas just had his third consecutive effective season of 30+ starts for Seattle. I kinda liked Vargas. Relievers are such crap shoots sometimes. I find it hard fault any GM for giving up on one, but when you turn around and give long term contracts to guys or rewards guys that just tested positive for cheating it's not good. It's one of the reasons though, I advocate keeping Ramon Ramirez around. History suggests he's a better reliever than he showed.

If they are talking 6/$100, I can't imagine they couldn't come around to 7/$125. It's $1 million per year more than the rumored starting number, and way less in years and salary than the Votto or Pujols deals. And if it's _not_ on top of the option year, they're actually pretty close to each other.
  7. bmfc1 wrote: A. Rodriguez is not in the starting lineup tonight. And there are good seats available for reasonable prices as MFY fans regard this round as the warm-up act for the Series: Brian Costa ?@BrianCostaWSJ StubHub shows more than 4,100 tickets available for Yanks-Os Game 5, starting at $36. That's actually a good day-of showing, there were 12k available when I woke up, as low as $15. But there are hundreds if not thousands available on Yankees.com. Look to the sections by the foul poles, particularly terrace level, if you want a laugh.
  8. bmfc1 wrote: You may be onto something here, Gwreck as Minaya is the GM that demoted R.A. in Spring Training. It appears that he had a bias against non-traditional pitchers. Reportedly that had more to do with Manuel. Omar at least had been trying to sign up for years, so sounds like he had a little bit more faith. Then again, I'm not sure how much anyone was autonomously calling the shots that year. I was okay not resigning Bradford or Oliver (though both of those over Mota would've been my pick..) if it was for contract length reasons, but then he either couldn't get the guys he wanted for 1 year, or had a change of heart and designed Schoe was worth 3.. I didn't hate the Smith stuff for Putz cause I felt like Putz was at least a good reliever, but they gave up too much for a guy they knew to be injured.
  9. 5. Who is the one batter Darren O'Day struck out as a Met? Prince Fielder?
  10. There was some question that the restrooms fixtures looked like they were salvaged from the Old Yankee Stadium or possibly brought over from Shea Stadium. Maybe that is why the male Yankee fans run out of the restroom before they do there paperwork. Dig at Shea and some bad grammar.

  12. I so wish they could manage dynamic playoff dates too. Say the ALCS and NLCS both only go 5 games. Instead of waiting a week to start the WS, one day off and go.
  13. HahnSolo wrote: After all our complaining today about how the Yanx always get the 8:00 game, Game 5 in this series will actually be in prime time on Friday while the MFY/Balt game (if there is one) gets shifted to the late afternoon slot -- most likely because,as of now, the NL tilt is the only one they KNOW will be need to be played. I think the reason the AL game is in the afternoon is because ALCS game 1 is starting Saturday giving whoever has to travel at least a couple extra hours. but it's Orioles Yankees so it'll go 4 hours anyway. good happy hour time though...drawback is that the guy I go to Happy Hours with is a Yankees fan.
  14. Edgy DC wrote: Congratulations. It took long enough to find their stride, but these guys sure looked stacked when the Mets were playing them every other game back in Spring Training. Detroit may have been the team most expected to run away with the division. They've got a huge bat coming back that missed all season, and some really nice pitching prospects to go with already the best pitcher in baseball. poor Robin.
  15. Frayed Knot wrote: I remember it [the Ibanez talk]. He was one of those guys seemingly "destined" to be a Met for a while. I don't think it was as early as you say. For a couple years there were talks about trades with Seattle and then again prior to his FA signing w/Philly but that Philly deal was 2009 so I think most of the talk was around '05 and later. He was always a good though somewhat anonymous player out in Seattle but I also imagined the outcry if Omar had signed or traded for a mid-30s guy with a Spanish name. One those guys destined to suck at Citi Field/Shea but thrives despite age in the bandboxes. and not as good as Scott Hairston.

  17. Frayed Knot wrote: The Opponents hit more grounders with full swings that wind up being hit too shitty to be turned in DPs than any team I've ever seen. I don't know how they do it but they do it all the time. That's two by Cano just tonight. They must do somethign to the grass or something. Jeter hits more infield squibs than anyone in baseball (Excepting maybe Ichiro) somehow they are just slow enough to not be playable.
  18. Frayed Knot wrote: You can't call me out on that pitch, I'm Derek Jeter. Was the gift basket not big enough? I can get you a bigger one...I thought we had an arrangement.
  19. Swan Swan H wrote: Who whines more than Jeter? Outside of a pre-school, I mean. Jimmy Rollins..maybe.

  23. Gwreck wrote: Ticket prices went up from 2006 to 2007, 2007 to 2008 and 2008 to 2009. Those were not all "supply/demand" increases but rather a calculated attempt to increase price levels before the new park opened. I do agree that the season ticket base is buying tickets irrespective of the team's performance. However, your other points are belied by the fact that the attendance dropped again this year, from last and from the year prior. ahh, but will it decrease further, or have we mostly reached a tailing off point? (Keeping in mind that the Yankees lost more fans. Perhaps there's a New York/economy type thing working there. So increase the prices, a little, in the sections where there is demand, and continue pushing packages and deals and giveaways for the others. makes sense) Does the All-Star Game create anything? I don't know, and I don't think the comparisons Megdal put out there necessarily translate, but I'm certainly not banking on the ASG doing that much. I don't know if the Mets are or not. But the Mets know more about payroll. Know more about what their offseason plans are. If they're banking on a winning season, they probably make back that attendance drop. Factor in a Mike Piazza Day..do they expect to sell out the day they retire his number? Between Piazza and the ASG, 2013 becomes a pretty good focal point for the Mets to sell the "We're back" angle. I don't think that's lost on them.
