  5. I'm planning to swear at people at RetroFitness for not having the game on, and being unable to figure out if they can change the channels, and then leave at 7:10.

  7. Wait, the Yankees have not one, but TWO 26-27 year old rookies backup infielders on the roster? An infield that's already suspect? And one of them is named Dean Anna?

Frayed Knot wrote: And also the manager doesn't want his starter--even if that starter is starter in name only and is hardly etched in stone for the future--to be thinking that he's going to lose his job on account of a bad game or two. Even saying "you're the starter until I say otherwise" sounds a little less dicey to one's ears even if it actually isn't. And conversely, you don't want him getting all pissy if he thinks he played well but the manager goes with a different guy for whatever reason the next day.

Enough to drive all the away in there? Maybe. Now if you'd told me a couple of hours ago... You gonna walk in and out 4 times to get 4 shirts?
  10. It sounds like he apologized for suggesting they should plan surgery, not necessarily that Daniel shouldn't be there.

  12. There's a difference between "Go sprint" and the snap reaction to chase after a baseball. Perhaps the decision to DL him WAS Terry/etc being smart about it, where Young probably said "I can go tomorrow". But Terry is given a roster of 25 guys. He has to work with the information he has. If Parnell says he's healthy (and let's face it, it's not like he was getting smacked around.) then you use him. If Chris Young can run for you, you put him out there. I'm not really sure what else he can do. These aren't "obvious" injuries. Chris Young could still run and take BP. Parnell could still hurl a baseball 93 MPH. I'll agree I haven't been thrilled with the level of perceived preparation the last few years, and I include Collins and Warthen in that regard, as guys ready to play and pitchers pitching enough to have actual arm strength are important. But nothing that's happened injury wise really is Terry's fault or avoidable in any way. But anyway, if there's a plan in place for beyond Terry, chances are that it won't happen in-season unless they think a change gets them into the playoffs. If the plan is Backman or Teufel, which I'm hoping it's not, then you should've just given him the job this season and been done with it. If you already know the NEXT Mets manager, you might as well put him on the field now.
  13. Lefty Specialist wrote: Regarding Parnell, it was obvious to all that he wasn't 100% during spring training. Young's injury, well, it was obvious he wanted to be out there, and guys will ask into the lineup even when they're not in top form. There, it's the trainer's job to say 'no'. They have all kinds of sophisticated ways to test things like quads. So somebody didn't do their job. Parnell didn't report the pain until after Opening Day. Granted their were alarm bells, but you don't just send guys for tests if they're not reporting pain. Chris Young probably passed the tests. He was scratched OD but probably precautionary. Then he ran hard for a fly ball and didn't make it to the bottom of the inning. But this isn't on Terry. Guys are on the roster and say they can go, they go. It's Sandy's job to DL/hold back guys.
  14. Frayed Knot wrote: Lefty Specialist wrote: Boy, it'll really grind my gears if they sell these at Citi. If they were selling Mariano retirement tour shirts at Fenway last year (and they were) then Jeter shirts at CitiField is a near certainty. I don't recall seeing the shirts at Citi though. But I don't think I looked either.
  15. Edgy MD wrote: All the more reason not to designate Duda as your firstbasey guy. yes, but giving a tangible answers makes the reporters get up and walk away and you can go back to doing your real job.
  16. Edgy MD wrote: Why make a decision at all? What new data suggests that anybody has won? Mix and match until somebody actually excels beyond the others. In 6 games we've got 3 with a DH. I'd wager it'll be 4 Duda, 1 Ike, 1 Satin up until then.
  17. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Edgy MD wrote: Reports have Lucas Doo designated as the firstbasey guy. This whole thing continues to be weird though. If they're willing to give one guy a shot, and they believe that guy is best-suited for the job, then why did that one sit on the bench for the first 2 days of the year? Still hurting? What? And if you've made a decision, why be coy about it only to "leak" the info? I don't get the impression that Terry is particularly savvy but a manager going on the record to make a declaration like that, with every beat guy subsequently crediting "a source with direct knowledge" identifying Doodoo, sounds like Terry nodded his head 'yes' when a crowd of reporters guessed the right starter. Ike Davis should be traded for a relief pitcher, and/or a prospect to replace the ones we need to call up, or as part of a Big Deal for relief pitchers and shortstops like we've been waiting for since last summer. I suspect a lot of it was "getting everybody in" There's presumably some value to that, and even if not there's an old-school train of thought to it. Now we're at a string of righties so you presumably pick a first baseman and go with it. But it should be Ike. Particularly if you want to trade one of them. We know what Duda is. We know he's an above average offense player who's flawed defensively but can probably hold down 1B well enough. Maybe he hits a little better this year than last, but it's not likely to be significant. But Ike? Ike's the wild card. he's been up and down. he was up last but got hurt and made the whole year look bad. So why not play that guy, hope for a hot streak, and then try to sell high, or sell as 'fixed'? I don't think his value can really drop if he were to play badly for a couple of weeks. Perhaps even if he plays badly, someone else will see something they think they can fix, like how you might buy a house with leaky pipes if you're a plumber.
  18. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Terry says he's going to pick a first baseman and stick with him for a while. (He's not saying who yet; probably wants to talk to the players before he says anything to the press.) So who will it be? Who do you hope it is? I find myself thinking it will be Duda. I don't think I'm rooting for one or the other, but I am curious. 3 righties. It won't be Satin. I think it'll be Ike, I hope it'll be Duda since he's the steady and good one and we need offense although that's relatively meaningless in 3-6 games (DH available after that for 3)
  19. Zvon wrote: Agree with all except Mr.T. He's hitting a bit, yes, but still playing with his head up his ass. It's getting old. He's fine. made all the plays. seems at least capable on the DP. (he was never really a plus SS) I don't really have a problem with him not barreling into a bigger than he is catcher when he was out by 5 feet. The chances he scores there by doing so are less than 1%. Loboton was just positioned too well. 2 feet up the line with the ball already in his glove and waiting.
  20. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I don't do "woe is me." All I'm saying is that I don't want to drive three hours each way to see this team. And I'm saying there are plenty of reasons why it'd be worth it and fun. Wasn't accusing you specifically of woe is me, general fanbase temperature and all and my feelings on it.
  21. Mets welcome the Cincinnati Reds in with Mike Leake pitching against Jenrry Mejia
  22. Edgy MD wrote: Score runs, give relievers margins for error, and they will serve you. I do think this was a big problem last year. We'll see where it goes this year. I will say I'd rather bring up Vic Black than keep both Torres and Lannan up here, that seems redundant.
  23. d'Kong76 wrote: Terry Collins will be borrowing some of Ceetar's post for his post game press conference. Just tired of wallowing in WoeIsMeIsm and screaming about this and that. I hope Terry's (well, Sandy) is looking into things too, I personally feel like the Mets have come to the regular season a little sluggishly in general the last couple of years, but that just may be me seeing things that fit my preconceived notion. Get enough WoeIsMe in real life between all the crap I need to get done. I'm personally really excited to see Mejia pitch tomorrow.
  24. Benjamin Grimm wrote: True. But they do look awful. I don't think it will be this bad throughout the season, but it's definitely a very bad start. David Wright is still awesome. Juan Lagares is looking like he might actually hit. Zack Wheeler got through an inning against a strong lineup beyond his tiring point. Good to see. Colon and Gee both pitched reasonably well. Tejada so far looks like he's at least shaken some of the yips he had last year and is hitting the ball. Granderson is a talented player and two+ doubles today bode well. The bullpen has been pretty bad, but there are some talented arms in there and some of the other guys will be replaced by other talented arms (like Walters, deGrom) down the line. There legitimately IS potential there. I mean, I'm pissed and frustrated and all but I'm certainly not down on Mets baseball. There's still going to be a lot of fun to be had.
  25. ahh, small samples sizes and overreactions to 3 games against the top team in the league.
